So got a bill through for council tax on my old flat that I rented with friends.

First half of the year was fine, lived with a student got 25% discount. Then from June to October I lived with a acquaintance (needed someone urgently to help pay rent).

Got a bill saying I owed money from June to December as that's when the landlord said I stayed until. (Have to dispute this with him as I was gone by first of oct)
Do I have any way off passing half the bill onto the acquaintance who lived with me? He would refuse to pay me the money, but if the council were to chase him it would be a different story.

Doubt it.

It sounds like the tenancy was in your name, ergo you're liable. It would be no different to you telling the Gas/Electric/Water Co to chase him for half their bills

Both of us signed a lease, in fact I was second to sign the lease as the student beforehand was already living there before me.

In that case I think you're required to inform the Council. Linky below may help
