Bit of old cine, of grass racing or Autocross in the 60's.
Lots of easily recognised A7s, Minis etc, but also mysteries, some of whihc I am sure are totally unique 'specials' with no bodywork at all.
One pair, at 1:35, might be a Lotus 6 and a blue car - but what?

Lovely old film. The pair in question look like a Speedex A7 Special, and a Fairthorpe electron.....

Thanks for that. Who says the 60s were not fun! As were the 70s. Thought there would be a few Imps in there, so glad I watched it.

Blimey, only 200 odd views - bet most of those are from on here.

I had a little fun autotesting my Imp a few times in the late 60s early 70s, but got nowhere. I was in awe of the Autotest National Champion who won the title more than once, he was local to me, one Trevor Smith in his Midget. He cut his teeth in autotests and was so good he went into rallying and became National Rally Champion in 1991.

As for the 2 cars, yeah, Speedex - or is it a Loti 6? Fairthorpe Electron definitely.

I think the first one is an Austin 7 special, looks like it could be "Simplicity". Well known, still exists and competes at various events.

Here's a 60's Austin 7 special. Really 'special'!

There were some clever young engineers screwing bits together in those days. This young guy had trained as a constructional engineer, and raced his specials in 750 MC events and then went on to create his own marque.

Before Ginetta, Clan and others (and the guy in the photo's own marque) had begun using Imp engines in the rear, he'd built this, 'front' Imp-engined special, when the Imp had hardly been around for five minutes.

The drive - was it to the front wheels? More likely the rear. But how? Did he use an Imp transaxle? Nobody has apparently found out that, nor figured out how this young genius did it. But the point is he ignored the convention of the Imp and stuck this recently introduced engine in the front. He's pictured down the bottom of his garden with it ...and throwing the norm out of the window again, he fitted it with twin SUs. Most enthusiasts will know who he is, the only person we believe to created a new marque by building its prototype in his front room! biggrin

Oh yes, as this is a 'what cars?' any ideas on the car (or is it 2) in the background under the covers?

Ah, but that was later - 70s - if I recall.

I used to spend a lot of time in Vic Derringtons and Paul Emery in London in the 60s when I was Imp mad. Emery was another Imp genius and got much credit. I liked his Emery GT. That was him, wasn't it? Not the 'Brian Ferry' in the pic though!

Adrian Evans (Davrian) the young man in the pic with his front Imp engine special was a tad more reserved.

Does that car still exist?

You must have bumped into my father at some stage as he worked for Paul when he has his workshops in Fulham.

Very nostalgic footage! I'd say 1966 or probably later, based on the MK II Cortina being pressed pretty hard. Someone beat me to it on the Swallow Doretti. I agree that's what it is. Do you think the light blue sports car could be a Turner?

Spotted so far........ Porsche 356, Volvo Amazon, Austin A30, Vivas HA&B, Lotus Elans, Imp and Chamois, BMW 700, Herald, Standard 8or10, Wolseley 1500, 105e and that incredible special that looks like the remnants of a Jag XK140! All those in adition to the Midgets, Cortina MK 1s and Minis. Some pretty valuable registration numbers too. Can't help wondering if any have survived.

Martin will be along to tell us which Electron, who the owner was and if the car still exists ... never seen one with those "bumper irons" which would be nearly useless !!

This is mine 838 HNK ...

My early marshaling days were at High Eggborough , E. Yorkshire , autocross and the film evokes the period beautifully. Local hero driver was Mad Dan Grewer , in the K Cars of York Mk 1 Cortina with - obviously - a Volvo 122 engine .....

But if you know where to look , you can find stuff just as entertaining in contemporary Autograss meetings . I went to a round last year and was blown away - fast and furious , and delightfully free of the pomp and nonsense which has spoiled some modern motor sport .
