Don't bank account number have a check digit so that it is difficult to enter a wrong, but valid number?

If they do, it's worked as the account is not valid.
But I think that they are just sequential
I opened two accounts at the same bank at the same time, and they were three numbers apart.

If the account number was incorrect and is not an actually account then the money will be held in a suspense account............contact the bank who the money was sent to....
As others have already said, it won't have gone through to this other account. One of my uni summer jobs was sorting out transfers where people had got the a/c details or name wrong, partial address etc. There's various means to match up the details then someone else checks it before sending the money on. If it's. It possible to Do so then it gets bounced back.

Bank to bank also works the same way. Used to deal with transfers in the hundreds of millions that couldn't be processed properly.

You won't have to worry about the cost of heating the pool for a while wink

£10k is the limit for faster payement and is free.
If you pay you can transfer what ever you like.
I transfer way more than that for free using faster payments. I did have to call the bank to the limit upped though and it is a business account.

I sent £46,000 to the gas company recently...
If you're with NPower, that could be a normal quarterly bill in the not-too-distant future!

Just to update and conclude. It was as you all said, money in suspense account and has been put back in the right place.

Phew!

As I posted earlier, I do have some understanding of what that felt like.

They do. But transpose two digits and you might strike (un)lucky!

Google 'Modulus 11'

If you think it's stressful sending from one bank account to another, try bitcoin. Always ALWAYS send a small amount first to confirm the transaction is successful before doing a large transfer...or you will never see it back. Have sent 100s of thousands of dollars in btc and while it is incredibly fast, easy and free of transaction cost it never gets any less heart in mouth.
