We are getting married next week in Spain as my girlfriend is spainish. As part of their tradition cash gifts are given. We need to get this money back to the UK and exchange it.

To complicate things we aren't coming directly back as we go on honeymoon first. However my girlfriend will be going back to Spain at the end of August so she could physically bring it back. However it seems a bit risky her carrying a large sum.

Her family has Spanish bank accounts and they wanted to pay it in and then transfer it to us but I guess the rate and charges would be bad.

Any advice ?

Thanks

If the cash gifts are in euros you will make a fab return converting them back to GBP.

For a one off transfer then your girlfriend's family could use a company like Transferwise. They are very open about their fees (generally 0.5% of any transaction) and, in my experience, are very easy to deal with.

We use Transferwise all the time to move money between the UK and Spain. You pay a flat rate fee, and get the mid market rate at the time you do the transfer.

It's the cheapest (and just about the fastest) way of moving money economically between GBP and EUR that I know of.

Thanks for or the replies guys. Yes the gifts are in euro's so it's a small win that the pound is next to worthless currently.

Transferwise looks exactly what I'm looking for.

So I understand correctly my Spanish in laws transfer the money to transferwise and they transfer it to me. Sounds ideal.

You could open a Revolut account? Easy to switch between euros and sterling (and loads of other currencies in general) And you get a good exchange rate - depends on the amount you are talking about though of course.
