And that certainly won't stop cryptocurrency. Watch the video. Take note of what IMF head Christine Lagarde said at this week's Bank of England conference.

Thanks Yipper - as ever you are an expert in every single thread on PH wink

unfortunately your points are not facts;

South Korea actually banned ICOs not cryptos - link - I suspect you only read the headline and not the detail.

Russia cannot make its mind up - link - I suspect this is a big power battle between those in power who think they can make even bigger fortunes and those who fear the loss of power an independent currency would bring.
Actually Russia has sort of made up its mind, de-facto. I know because I was talking to a Russian about the possibility of mining there. 7 years in the clink for mining or having or using Crypto.

that said I intuitively think that govt banning, in patches, stop it. With a now regulated BTC exchange and more large global players adding it to their list of ways to pay, I can see that momentum gained in non-banned countries will eventually sway the currently banning countries.

do you have a link to substantiate that please?

All I could find was a plan to ban mining in residential properties - link.

Russia has changed its mind a million times. It issues plenty of threats. I've yet to see a single tangible law.

yes 100% - buy a trezor or similar hardware wallet.

if you read the various reddit subs there are some very sophisticated social engineering scams being performed - people losing 5 BTC or more....

A very noob question.

If I invest in BTC on eToro am I actually buying BTC?

No. If you don't have the private key to the BTC wallet then you don't have the BTC.

I have used bitcoin in the past to buy questionable things online but never "invested" in it.

Does anyone that deals with it currently have any views on Bitcoin Gold and the fork that is coming, I see litecoin going down and was guessing it was people buying bitcoin so when the fork happens they will have the same balance in bitcoin gold. Am i anywhere near the truth?

Bitcoin Gold has gone almost completely under the radar on most of the the reddit type forums. As I understand it there will be a hard fork with replay protection so you'll get coins on both chains. But I have not really seen any commentators who think the BTC Gold will have much value at all. In fact it is very similar to the other upcoming fork Segwit 2X which is trading low on the futures markets.

I'm a holder by nature but now seems to be a good time to hold BTC and see how things progress.

Also there have been some good news stories regarding how various countries view cryptos (e.g. link or link).

But as always do your own research and make your own decisions.

You are, as of a few weeks ago - hence why you can only buy at a leverage of 1. Check their T&Cs, in particular the UK Cryptocurrencies addendum.
There is talk that they may make them withdrawable in the near future to your own wallet, but for the meantime they are kept in your account.
Try buying BTC and look at the fine print at the bottom of the trade window (no need to actually trade) - it warns you that you are carrying out a real transaction, not a CFD, and links to the relevant T&Cs.

Then you are absolutely not buying your own BTC until they walk that talk. Caveat emptor.

Decided to try a different approach, as BTC has rocketed up so quickly - opened a "sell" position on Etoro, because I think it will go down as fast as it went up!
