If you had the choice of the following in coupe form:

3.0 SC
3.2 Carrera
964 Carrera 2

All in excellent condition for their year and within your budget.

Which would you choose and why, investment not being a factor.

My first 911 was an '83 SC - bought with 5k mls on the clock.

Then had two new 3.2 Carreras, two new 964 C2s, two new 993s C2s......run as my only day-to-day drive. I still have a real soft spot for the best of the aircooled 911s.

Of course, these days, it very much depends on the individual example. Personally, I'd choose the best, original, lowish mls, G50, 3.2 Coupe I could find - but nostalgia has a part to play in that.

I looked at all 3 and went for the 964 but my requirements were pretty specific in that I wanted to create a sharp analogue aircooled 911. The 964 is a good platform to upgrade easily with off of the shelf contemporary chassis and brake tuning parts. Coilover suspension blah, blah.. To build it I needed to throw a lot of bits away (well wrap them up and carefully store them actually) and bolt a lot of new bits on. If I were looking at standard cars only I wouldnt go 964 as I think that it's too soft and heavy compared to the other two. Probably the 3.0.

All lovely little busses, but not cheap anymore

964 for it's improved "modernity". As Steve said, they're a bit of wobbly barge in standard form, but that'll allow you to worship at the alter of the great god "Upgrade and Improve" over time.
There's a lot of rubbish out there though, so if you're not au fait with them, take someone who is, and ultimately get a decent PP inspection before handing cash over.

I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with any on that list as long as you got a good example. Personally, I went for the 964 (C4, targa) and I love it. Driven an SC and a 993 a lot too and they are all great. I'd say 964, SC then 993 if I had to put them in order but to be honest, there's not very much in it.

The 3.2, especially with G50, is better notably better than the 3.0SC, IMO.

Didn't see a 993 on the list! wink

Never got on with the mint 993 C4 I owned.

Had two 3.2 Carrera's.

For me it would be:

1. 3.2 Carrera
2. 964 C2
3. 3.0 SC

But I may try a 964 C2 if the opportunity arises.

All great cars if in good condition.

I think from 1976 era till the 964 the cars are not the greatest, And now the cheapest, hence all the back dates going on.

To drive it would have to be a lightened G50 3.2 Carrera. Most reliable and pure of the bunch. I'd drop a 993 engine in it

So what would make a G50 3.2 Carrera more reliable and Pure than an SC? Just interested.....

Nothing just bit harder to find a good one as bit older. Its the gearbox that would seal the G50 for me as can handle quite a bit of power. Thinking about it an SC would be perfect but not sure a 915 box could handle 300 + horses from a 993 engine. You can let me have a drive of your SC then maybe I'd be in a better position to decide wink
