Which would you choose
Discussion
My first 911 was an '83 SC - bought with 5k mls on the clock.
Then had two new 3.2 Carreras, two new 964 C2s, two new 993s C2s......run as my only day-to-day drive. I still have a real soft spot for the best of the aircooled 911s.
Of course, these days, it very much depends on the individual example. Personally, I'd choose the best, original, lowish mls, G50, 3.2 Coupe I could find - but nostalgia has a part to play in that.

I looked at all 3 and went for the 964 but my requirements were pretty specific in that I wanted to create a sharp analogue aircooled 911. The 964 is a good platform to upgrade easily with off of the shelf contemporary chassis and brake tuning parts. Coilover suspension blah, blah.. To build it I needed to throw a lot of bits away (well wrap them up and carefully store them actually) and bolt a lot of new bits on. If I were looking at standard cars only I wouldnt go 964 as I think that it's too soft and heavy compared to the other two. Probably the 3.0.
All lovely little busses, but not cheap anymore

964 for it's improved "modernity". As Steve said, they're a bit of wobbly barge in standard form, but that'll allow you to worship at the alter of the great god "Upgrade and Improve" over time.
There's a lot of rubbish out there though, so if you're not au fait with them, take someone who is, and ultimately get a decent PP inspection before handing cash over.

I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with any on that list as long as you got a good example. Personally, I went for the 964 (C4, targa) and I love it. Driven an SC and a 993 a lot too and they are all great. I'd say 964, SC then 993 if I had to put them in order but to be honest, there's not very much in it.

Didn't see a 993 on the list! Never got on with the mint 993 C4 I owned.
Had two 3.2 Carrera's.
For me it would be:
1. 3.2 Carrera
2. 964 C2
3. 3.0 SC
But I may try a 964 C2 if the opportunity arises.
All great cars if in good condition.
Ive had a 964 Which was a bit of a dog.. My first Porsche didnt know what I was doing
Then got a 993 C4S Now your talking
Traded it for a 997 Turbo Mistake really But everyone should have that experience Porsche people that is.
I got a 3 . 2 Carrera to go along with it Nostalgia... Was the G50 Guards red Coupe.. Great car BUT I thought pig to drive and that noise Too Much..... Sold it and went other end scale got a Boxster Spyder.... Lovely to drive like a young frisky horse Love it Still got it..
But yearned for an air cooler again.. So sold the Turbo and Got a 993 Carrera 4.. Pastel yellow Rs body kit this car looks a million dollars and drives lovely... just about put some RUF alloys My plan is keep this beauty..
But Who Knows ????

To drive it would have to be a lightened G50 3.2 Carrera. Most reliable and pure of the bunch. I'd drop a 993 engine in it
So what would make a G50 3.2 Carrera more reliable and Pure than an SC? Just interested.....Gassing Station | Porsche Classics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
