There's a North Face jacket I've fancied for a few years. RRP is £180. I've always had £120 in my head as the price I'd be happy to pay. Every year it's the same ... Plenty of people claim to have said jacket for £120, but it's suddenly only available in XXL

I've always viewed it as I do every other "sale" in that if you can get an item you really want for less than you normally would pay then it's a good thing.
What I don't get is people piling pretty much anything in their baskets just because it says it has 70% off.
I tend to find that if you do your homework you can often find a bargain for a top reviewed item at any time of year with a little bit of effort.

Year 1: buy hundreds of 50% reduced pies. Kind of lost interest in BF now.
Year 2: buy XXL jacket.
There's deals out there to be had but a lot isn't that great - you might get a 10% reduction in a tv for example. Amazon can be good with HDD's/SSD's - last year I picked up a 750gb Crucual SSD for about £107. They are currently on there at £209 so i would suspect another price drop soon..
Very sceptical myself.
Amazon used to some great deals a number of years back before it was as mainstream (if I call it was one item every half hour for one day only and they were genuinely the cheapest by some way, like a half price kindle). Now days they have a week long event lots of rubbish

Yes and no - there is some preemptive price inflation as mentioned above, but equally I am in the market for a Google Home speaker, which are at the £129 list price everywhere (and have been for weeks/months). I expect to pay £99 on Black Friday.
Just purchased from BT shop - £79!I’ve got a few bargains - if you have done your research on the correct price to pay and ignore the claimed discount from inflated lis price.
Amazon had alexa echo dots for £30 which was only repeated on the prime day in the summer.
And as mentioned above they had some good prices on ssd’s which all got snapped up before i realised.

for the sake a psychological £60 you could have bought it a few years ago and enjoyed it between then and now. I go through the same process myself - e.g - I waited and waited or xboxes to get under £200 quid when I could had one months/years ago if it wasn't for the psychological £20 price difference. I'm quite lucky in that my father in law is way up in management for the shop direct group, he sends me an email for the forthcoming black Friday deals and I can reserve what I want without having to fight with the masses. Plus he gets discount on those prices too. They may take a hit on a couple of items but the websites takes many tens of millions in sales on black Friday. He likens it to an ocean full of hungry piranhas feasting on a rotting whale carcass.
I've usually bought something each year, but never in a shop, all online. It will be random things like wheel sealant though.
I just bought an Echo dot and TP-link plug for £45 off Amazon, which seems a great deal as those things are usually £75 together.
I certainly haven't managed to get all Christmas shopping done on black Friday though which I think was one of the original intentions.
