We have a cottage in North Norfolk which we have had about 10 years. We love it up there and will never tire of the norfolk countryside.

Mind you, we were in our early fifties when we bought it, long after the kids left home. I don't think it would have had a lot of use when they were younger, however, the grandchildren are getting some use out of it now.

We now own it outright, and feel very lucky to be in this position. It has given us an escape plan if necessary. If we get fed up working we know we can sell our main house, move up to Norfolk and live off the proceeds.

To the OP, I don't think a flat is a good idea, if I was you, I would look further inland for an old cottage which you could possibly add value to over the years.

As for buying abroad, that's not really for us.
For one thing we have a dog. Also, you have to plan when you go, buy tickets, etc, not to mention all the hassle of airports.
With us, we can decide at the last minute knowing it's a 2 hour drive door to door.
