That is possibly the most misleading post I have read anywhere on the internet ever!

Back to the OP - This £23k assets, interesting......

My Mum has been in a council-funded home for just over a year. Dad lives at home in his c£1m un-mortgaged house. The council pays for all of Mum's care home costs as neither she nor Dad have £23k liquid assets - The house is excluded from all calculations.

Dementia is an illness, you do understand that? Why should we fund care for cancer, but not dementia?
Depends on what service is being provided. If it's treatment for the dementia, then it probably can and should be funded, with you picking up the residential portion of the tab. If it's simply nursing care because you're no longer able to put your own pants on etc, then self funded.

Cancer sufferers get treatment for their condition, not their living/existing costs covered.

Dementia sufferers can get fully funded if it's based on medical need, however the disease has to be extremely advanced for this to happen.

Dementia is not an illness, it’s a symptom normally associated with an illness but can also be entirely reversible.
rofl
What’s funny?
You need to get on the stage, or report your findings to the BMJ...
You’re making yourself look a bit silly. Please go and educate yourself - I’ll try and dig out the last presentation I did on it later to throw some decent references at you for further reading too.

Dementia is not an illness in its own right. It can be caused by many different diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Lewy bodies, cancer, vascular degeneration etc. Worth reading up on it if you’re interested.

I did a lot of research when my Mother was diagnosed. It is actually a group of symptoms caused by numerous factors including old-age.

Alzheimer's does not cause dementia, it is a type of dementia!!

One of us just said "Dementia is not an illness, it’s a symptom normally associated with an illness but can also be entirely reversible." rofl

Let's see you reverse it then... You do realise you could make fking millions if you could find a way to reverse it.

I know this is emotive, I didn’t like winston’s arrogant response earlier so picked him up on his inaccuracy. I don’t intend to denigrate the diseases, just clarify the terminology.

Please have anothe read, Alzheimer’s causes dementia

That's not true, Alzheimers is a degenerative condition that ultimately affects memory (amongst other things)

He said it can be reversible, which is true, not that it's completely curable in 100% of cases.

Says the man who says Dementia can be reversed rofl My response is arrogant because I've seen what dementia does to far too many people first hand.

Please stop assuming you know about this when it’s clear that you don’t. Read some of the links I’ve posted and educate yourself. The word ‘dementia’ is a medical term that is a symptom of various illnesses or insults and, in some cases, can be reversed.

You’re using the word to describe all elderly associated causes of dementia and therefore struggling to understand why you’ve been corrected.

Ah, you mean you can recover from a bang on the head or a night on the tiles. Don't quote semantics on a dementia thread.

In badda's defence, dementia can be brought on by drug/alcohol abuse (for example). Cutting those out will reverse the effects. Dementia (such as Vascular) cannot be reversed - It can be slowed and even temporarily stalled but, not reversed.

Thats because the rules say if a spouse lives in the home its excluded from the calculations of the first party going into care .If your dad needs to go into care the house value will then be taken into account .
