Why do you care if it's Brakes that supply them?
Because its usually a chain that deals in heated up frozen food so maybe I should have said chain restaurant instead of saying one that's supplied by a certain company. I'd rather either spend a little extra and go to a proper restaurant or cut to the chase and go to 'spoons where the cheaper microwaved Brakes food can be found.
You'll struggle to find many pubs that do their own freshly made and cooked food in the UK nowadays. The vast majority of them are supplied by Brakes or 3663 (or Bidvest as they seem to call themselves now) and comes to your plate via the freezer and microwave.
bks. Get away from the chavvy pubs and you'll find loads that employ a decent, if basic, chef and who create their own menus and food.

But Brakes offer all forms of food? A good friend of mine is a regional sales manager for them and I see their portfolio often....it's up to the restaurants what they buy, not Brakes!

Having also worked in the food wholesale industry ( a firm bought by Hunts) and dealt with Brakes I agree. There is most definitely a large selection of high quality food products sourced from local & national suppliers it's just a bit more effort getting people to pay for it. Unfortunately though in recent years a LOT of smaller independent wholesellers and food producers have been bought by larger national chains which from what I can tell has led to higher costs and less choice.

There are certainly people in the catering industry who cannot understand that a farmer raises a cow, sends it to slaughter, the meat be processed/packed/distributed as a steak all for £3. A wholeseller who orders a pallet load of them can sell/deliver it to their door for £3.50. Then after someone has slapped it in a pan for 5min they charge £25, yet think they are getting hard done by if the price goes up to £3.55. At times when a cheaper alternative can be sourced the majority of the feedback is " i like the cheaper price but my customers don't like the product as much", probably because they are still paying 25quid for it banghead

In law of mine always has to have a bargain. His credit card has a “concierge service” he pays for it so he uses it, then chastises them if they don’t get him the cheapest options (as he still does all the legwork in searching hire cars etc himself to check they’re doing their job properly!)

Outside of the farm gate any milk you buy would have been pasteurised where it’s super heated to kill any bugs in it. The stuff the supermarkets sell is also refined even more and comes from
cows bred for yield rather than quantity.

Is yield not the same as quantity?
I think he meant "yield rather than quality"

As far as I'm aware supermarket milk is imported from Europe (mostly) hence the cheap cost
I don’t think that’s true - have you got a source? I expect the taste difference has more to do with fat content. There is definitely a market for “white water” these days, and herds are increasingly stocked with breeds that produce lower fat milk.
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/18/dairy-products-may-become-luxuries-after-uk-leaves-eu

Britain does not produce enough milk to keep up with demand, creating a dependency on the EU, including on dairy-surplus countries such as Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium and Denmark for everyday items such as cheddar cheese and butter.
That's lovely. It does NOT. however, support the assertion that MOST supermarket milk is imported.

I work overseas so my living costs are quite low, however I've recently noticed the cleaner where I stay leaves out a bar of soap, so I've stopped buying shower gel. She's not quite so quick at replacing it, so I've got an emergency bar that I use and hide until she notices and puts out a new one.
I buy shower gel in bulk 6 X 500ML bottles at a time. Used Camelcamelcamel to track the price and bought them at £8.99

Tracking the price of shower gel.

Does it get any sadder?

Talking of bags smile When the 'bag for life' was first introduced by Sainsburys they were giving them out for free. I managed to get a few then and have never actually paid for a carrier bag. Each bag seems to last a few months before needing to be exchanged as it's typically got a hole/tear in it.
Maybe the quality has gone downhill because I am still using the two Sainsburys bags for life when they first came out. Been used for many years when I used to scan and pack, handy as they stand upright in the trolly.

A few quid here a few there its surprising how it mounts up. Helped me run my Elise for three years, sold that back to the dealer for nearly what I paid for it.

There’s a thread like this on a U.S. Forum that I subscribe to, it goes, “I’m so frugal that I ........
Some of them here,
I wash, rinse, and dry toilet paper.
I save the cotton wool from pill bottles,
to use as nail polish remover.
I put 6 half gallon jugs of water out on
the back doorstep at night, they’re cold
in the morning, saves running the fridge.
(This must be someone who lives in a
Northern, cold State, Christ knows what
happens with milk and butter etc., unless
they mean that they put the water out, to
save the fridge working harder, to chill it.)
