Things cheap people do

As we approach the end of the tax year was reminded of another one my tight in-law does,
He’s a higher rate tax payer & like many of us declares charitable gift aid donations to get the tax back, however he discovered that certain charity shops accept items given & will track the value of what your donations sold for & give you a letter to claim back the higher tax on that “donation” (it’s win win as they get the basic rate - why they do it).
Needless to say he doesn’t throw anything out or put it in a textile bank now.

My mum used to steam unfranked stamps from envelopes for re-use. I'd come in from school to find the kitchen full of steam and mum with a blithe expression, happy in the knowledge she was contributing to the family exchequer. The electricity bill was picked up by dad and never questioned.
