Afternoon all,

Reposted on this thread after a steer from Julian. Thanks for that.

First time poster on this board so please be gentle!

I'm looking for advice/guidance on a the type of fund to invest in. Why? I have never invested in one before and I'm completely bewildered by the choice out there and do not know where to start.
I'm currently invested in individual stocks which are not doing well and have an income from military pension & BTL, so in the interests of diversity I'm looking for a suitable fund. I'm risk adverse, looking at 5 year term, can do lump sum initially and possible drip feed very month. Growth rather than income. Looking to retire as early as possible (aren't we all!)
I appreciate this is a bit finger in the air but I'd welcome some thoughts and opinions please.

Thanks.
Hi Mark

Firstly (and I know this sounds like a cliché), but thank you for your service in the forces.

I come from a family of people who served for us (my Grandfather, for example, was a Sergeant Major).

Addressing your question, yes, it is finger in the air stuff, though I hope I can be of assistance. You really have two choices when it comes to funds, Index Trackers or Managed.

Index Trackers are low cost and just follow markets. Managed Funds tend to be higher cost and whist they aim to outperform markets, they rarely do consistently. There are some exceptions.

As you already hold individual stocks then you could go two ways:

1) Continue with stock selection under under your own steam, or move this to a managed approach
2) Diversify by holding index trackers

If your individual stock holdings are not going well you may wish to consider moving these to a fund manager with a good reputation and track record. If you are just having a bad time of this recently, then so are we all!

With regard to putting money into an index tracker fund, Vanguard are excellent and their global trackers are hard to beat.

We do one too, but it is not quite as cheap, as we also provide unlimited personal financial and tax planning at no extra cost.

It might be worth us having a chat. Just PM me.

Cheers

Julian

I've just signed up for PH recovery.

If you could double my money in around a month, that would be great. I've got a new driveway being laid in a couple of weeks, so really need something nice to put on it...

Excited to be involved - it can't go any worse than my efforts on the gamble thread. If it does, I've got my pitchfork sharpened already.

(Julian, Nik, I'm the one who left a note saying I'm waiting on Vanguard to release funds but please take this meagre sum as an opening balance to get the ball rolling. Might help you put a face (IM customer number) to a PH username.)

I dabbled in individual shares years ago, and came to the opinion that unless you are really up to speed on the companies your investing in it was more pot luck how those investments did. Also if the company went bust you'd lose all that investment.

So therefore I decided funds were the safer option, they are spread across multiple companies, so extremely unlikely they'd all go bust, and of course managed funds are an even safer option in my mind, as hopefully someone who knows what they are doing is managing it.

I reckon all those who invested into woodford would find fault with your logic

I'm now in with PH Recovery for a whopping £120! Diverted a subset of my regular SIPP contribution over to it whilst I wait for the transfer of some of the existing funds to go over too.

That's the sort of devil may care attitude that capitalism is all about.

It's a gamble, and gambling is not the preserve of capitalists.

But he did know what he was doing at one stage, had an admirable track record for years, then the wheels fell off.

So even after carrying out research you can still be 'humped'

Hi All

Sorry for the radio silence today.

Everything has been very busy (as I am sure you can imagine) and the budget today has thrown more into the mix.

I am calling it a day now. I believe I have got back to all emails and I will get back to everyone here in the morning.

Very interesting times...

Julian
