A big part of the service that the Private Client Service team offer is helping clients make informed decisions about the course of action they want to take.

This often includes making you aware of things that may not be immediately obvious and debunking a lot of the financial language used in documents so that you understand what options you have and what the pros and cons of a given course of action will be.

It then means that you can be confident in any decisions you make without falling foul of unintended consequences.

Our experience is that some clients of all the moving parts and have taken into consideration all that they should have and are grateful and more confident once we have been able to confirm that things are as they thought they were. But often there are areas that people just haven't considered as they were unaware that they existed and having taken the new information into account the decisions that are made are often quite different to the one they expected to be making.

My team make sure that you have full picture and understand the options you have so you can be confident in the decisions that you make.

Hi

Sorry to say we have some IT gremlins at moment. There is an intermittent fault on in the online application process that is causing a DOB error and gives an error message saying you need to be over 16 to use the service.

Apologies if you have tried to apply and have had this message. We are working to fix it.

In the meantime enjoy the fact that system obviously thinks you are looking good and under 16!

Nik

Hi

I see the new General Investment Account is now live, to complement the ISA and SIPP side of things. I have stocks and shares with another provider and I want to sell the shares and move the funds across to you guys. Would this generate a tax bill?

Thanks in advance.
Hi NorthDave,

Assuming your existing stocks and shares are not held in an ISA it is likely that you will be subject to a capital gains tax assessment when you sell them down. The first £12,000 of gain has no further tax to be paid on it and you can use losses to off set gains.

If you want to PM me at nik.burrows@intelligentmoney.com I will happily take a look at your current holdings and see if there is a liability and if there are any options to reduce any tax due.

Regards

Can I ask whether your fees are stated in line with MFID II, when I transferred my DB pension in March 2017 it was suggested my FM and IFA fees would total 1.75% inc VAT where applicable, it turns out they are running at around 2.05% now the fee structure is allegedly clearer. It has returned 7.3% net of fees in total since fully invested in Oct'17 but they have taken approximately £60,000 in fees during that time.

I'm nervous about chasing costs and performance and worry about moving due to the impact on the fund, I'm 47 and would like to retire around 55-57. I have spoken to Nik briefly but have sat on the fence since for fear of doing the wrong thing. I came out medium risk 5 during my review.

Views and opinions appreciated.
Hi Vvrooom,

If you want to chat through your thoughts please feel free to let me know and we can set up another call. It may help you get comfortable with your current plans or help clarify any concerns you have and the alternatives that are available.

I am reticent to get involved in this type of debate on the forum and prefer to deal with questions raised about financial issues but feel that in this case, given recent comments specifically about the service that my team and I offer, I should share my views.

It is always disappointing to me that people feel the need to pass opinion and comment about a service they have no experience of, particularly when these comments are in response to the opinions of people who have used the service,

My view is that any client has the right and opportunity to decide who they trust, who they want to deal with and what they feel represents value for the service they receive. When deciding who to work with I would always suggest people explore a number of options and then do what they feel most comfortable with.

As for my view on the subject of fees and charges. As long as any fees and charges are clearly and simply declared and that the individual who is paying understands exactly what they are getting in return, then only they can decide if they are getting value for the service they receive and the fee they pay.

Another positive review from me here. A very relaxed, no pressure 'consultation' who helped me (a novice with all this) understand what options where available to me and explain things in plain English that the layman can understand. Despite me not being any kind of 'big hitter' Nik spent plenty of time helping me and I really appreciate it.

One further question, if I want to start a stock/share ISA depositing monthly early next year, should I register now or wait until the time please?

thanks again.
It was good to speak to you and I'm glad you found it useful. There is no need to set up your ISA until you are ready start paying in.

Hi Superlightr

Thank you for getting the paperwork over to us. Timescales vary from provider to provider so the glib answer is yes, days/weeks/months!

I'll try and give a more useful answer though. The process typically takes 2-8 weeks depended on the existing providers turn around.
Your funds remain invested with the existing provider for the majority of this time, once they are ready to transfer the funds will only be out of the market for around 48 hours.

I need to start a new pension plan and start contributing each month and would appreciate some recommendations as to where to go?

Royal London or Aviva?

Or any other ideas?

I have a SIPP with Hargreaves Lansdowne but this was just consolidating some old work pensions I had paid into over the years. Being as i chose to stick half of that into Woodford I don't think I'm the best person to be managing my pension going forward so my plan is to leave the SIPP sitting as it is and start paying a grand a month into a new pension.

Or should I move the current money in the SIPP to a ready made managed medium risk portfolio fund and add a grand a month into this?

For context I'm 44 years old and a higher rate tax payer.

Advice would be much appreciated.

And mountain bikes.

He can talk mountain bikes all day like a goodun.!

Am yet to find out how fast the bugger is on one mind.
I don't know either, I imagine the bugger can go bloody fast though!

This may come as a surprise for those who have met the very mild mannered Nik, but he also achieved double red instructor level at Muay Thai kickboxing (so higher than instructor level and X Dan in other martial arts that use belt grades).

Needless to say, we just pay Nik what he wants! biggrin

There are lots of interesting factoids about Nik, for example I wanted him to work with PHers not just because of his ability and skills, but also because he was serious car nut himself (and former TVR owner).

Back in the day he constantly complained about how something on his Chimaera would not work if he required something else to work at the same time!. smile

I used to enjoy telling him that was very unusual for a TVR (for the very short time before he realised this, but still wouldn't sell). hehe
Ok so before this gets out of hand and I'm made to look too windswept and interesting, I think I should point out my TVR experience probably sums up my car nut position, I loved it and it was so much fun to drive but in all honesty beyond that I have no idea and relied on good friends like Julian to keep me on the straight and narrow, for example telling we that a TVR's windscreen wipers should always work fine and they are well know for reliable electrics and I should definitely complain!!! What a car though, like I say so much fun and I think I loved it more for its Idiosyncrasy’s.
As for my Muay Thai days to say that was sometime ago is an understatement and i struggle to get my leg high enough to get into bed somedays now. Julian was always one step ahead and picked a martial art that already had pyjamas! He may of got a black belt to go with his "Judo jamas" but was still always thinking ahead. wink
