Hi all,

Can anybody recommend a good accountant to complete my year end accounts and close off my Ltd company please? I was only contracting for two and a half months in 2017 and I now need everything closed off.

I can tell you one I don't recommend (and the company I used generally comes recommended!). I'm no longer with them but can't say here due to name and shame etc.

When was your year end? And when you say a couple of months trading, was that in total or just in your last financial year?

Oh, I clicked "Email me" in your profile. Is your email address up to date or has it gone to junk mail? Is there another way to message members here?

That was in total. My year end was 31st May 2018.

I have to ask, who advised you to set up a Ltd company for such a small amount of work? Or, am I right to assume you didn't expect it to last for such a short time.

Whilst I hate to say this, being an accountant, have you thought about doing it yourself? From what you've posted I can't imagine you've many transactions to process and the filing process to Companies House is pretty straightforward for a small company. As is payment of corporation tax.

You're right, I thought I'd be contracting for longer than I actually was. I got offered a permanent role with the company I was contracting for so decided to take it.

I had a look at doing it myself at the weekend but I got a little confused on the terminology for the Companies House filing process, simply because I've never done it before.

Are there any online software packages that I could use to ensure I get it right if I do it myself? As you say, the transactions are limited so I think it's a very easy job for someone who has done this, even once before.

Even though it's only a couple of months, I imagine most accountants will charge their usual fee for end of year accounts and closing the business. If you are happy with that, I can recommend my accountant.

No affiliation or financial incentive to me. He's a competent accountant.

There are loads of online packages, but they all tend to cost. I think it might be more cost effective to pay for a couple of hours of an accountant's time, say £200 plus vat, to do the job. From what you've said that's about an hour and a half or so to produce the accounts and then 30 minutes or so to submit the filings.

But, this would be very dependent on a) you're not VAT registered, b) not that many transactions and they are in a tidy (fit) state and c) you'll do everything else required to close down the company (assuming that's what you intend to do) and d) it all goes smoothly.

If you just have a "shoe box" with loads of dirty, mangled receipts which are hard to read it could well cost more.
