Hi PH,

I've never been to Malvern before. Thinking of taking the bike and should have a child free slot for about 2-3 hours.

Can any locals recommend a route of 20-30 miles? Will be setting off at about 4.30 - 5 PM so i'm mainly wanting to avoid traffic. Love hills but i'm out of shape so nothing that can't be done on 34-28 please!

Cheers in advance

If you go east from Malvern, it's really flat, a proper bowl almost as far as Stratford.

A good 30 mile loop would be to go South to Hollybush, west to Eastnor, follow the road south and then east to Camer's Green, then Marsh End, Longdon, Upton upon Severn (good cake stop this!) Hanley Castle and then home. There are a few little lumps but predominantly flat, that would be about 300-400m climbing I think. It's a lovely area for riding.

Where are you starting from, exactly? If you have a list of requirements, such as interesting places to stop I'll be back online tonight. Or drop me a PM.

Some of the busy roads are fine for cycling, and some of the quiet roads are suicidal.

Thanks Wiccan and Usget.

Staying at the spa hotel. On a map, it's right next to an area of outstanding beauty - i'd like to try to find a route that takes that in, but without 20% hills - i tried plotting a map freehand and had a 25% ramp and a near 30% descent - bugger that!

I live on the border between cheshire plain and the peaks - so although a flat ride is tempting I'd like a bit more bump - thinking 2500-3000 feet of climb maybe? Not too prescriptive though coz all i really need is "these roads are.nice, those roads are awful" or "you must go here it's lovely".

Thanks again

Well - the beacon is 1394 ft so there won't be huge heights. But the east side is very steep straight up, if you're brave head up in to town and scramble up happy valley.

The eastern plains are wonderful; look at heading up the worcester road, through town and along wells road; chuck a left downhill towards welland on the A4104. As the road bends to the left, after the bend chuck a right, towards Strawbyn kennels and cattery. Turn right on to castlemoreton straight, and then right again, back across the common. Stop off at Gullet quarry and gawp at the hole in the ground. Continue along the lane towards hollybush, and turn left on the A438 towards Tewkesbury. At the staggered crossroadsgo straight across, after a few hundred yards bear left at the Duke of York pub. That's a lane called Marsh lane, and takes you across Longdon marsh; turn left after around 3 miles towards Longdon, don't cycle on the main road. There's a right stty bit of road as the B4211 enters Longdon. End of that lane, turn left on the B4211 towards Upton. The waterfront at Upton is quite nice, unless it's all in flood and the national news crews are there with some token politician "doing their bit" when in fact they're just trying to appeal to the floating voters.

From there you can either cross the river and head north towards worcester and back again, or stay on the west side of the river, cycle north through Hanley castle, The Rhydd and towards Callow End; chuck a left down Jennet Tree lane. Then it's right, then a left and you're back on the worcester road; left again past morrisons and back to spa hotel.

How does that grab you?

If you want anything else, just PM me.

Legend, thanks Wiccan.
Will try to make that into a gpx - if i manage it, i'll make it a route on strava or mapmyride so other phers (and people with google) can also partake!

Try that. Fits all your criteria, 29 miles and 3 hours cycle time.

Hi Wiccan,

Thanks again - just finished it.
Really good route with very little traffic. I especially liked the bit just after the gate where you meander through pretty much nothing with the occasional inquisitive sheep. View from the top at the start was just beautiful today as well - really clear with the sun coming though the trees.
