Hi

My Daughter is 17, having driving lessons and is looking for a car ( so far on her list is a Fiat 500 or an Up )

Which brings me to the expensive business of Insurance. Cheapest way to do it having a parent as a named Driver ? Only insuring whilst driving ( not sure how that works )

Black box seems a certainty,

Any experiences / recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance

Multi-car can work. All you need is 3 months on cover and they will earn a full year no claims. Do this whilst they're learning and it's cheap.

My daughter hasn't passed yet, but I am expecting a full year once she's passed to be around the £1K mark. Time will tell.

I just re-read what I wrote, and it could be clearer.

As long as they are added to the policy at least 3 months before the renewal date, they will earn a full years no-claims. In order to make the best use of this, the timings need to work for your circumstances.

Named drivers dont earn NCB. Only the main driver earns NCB

Some providers may give you a discount when that named driver takes out their own policy but it's not transferrable

Also be careful if the named driver is actually the main driver of the car

Insured both my daughters at 17 over the last few years.

First was with Admiral with a ‘plug and play’ black box that they only needed in the car for 3mths. She did the insurance in her own name with mum and dad as named drivers. This was on a Fiat 500 and cost £900 in year one and dropped to about £600 in the second year.

Insured our second daughter in December on a Skoda Fabia via More Than (smart wheels) again with mum and dad as named drivers. This one has a hardwired black box for a year and cost about £800. So far she has had two ‘good driving credits’ via a prepaid card totalling about £45 which is quite a good incentive, plus this will have a positive influence on her renewal premium.

Hope this helps.

Another vote for Admiral.
I insured all 3 of my children with them - all in their own names ( otherwise you are fronting and illegal ) and when the second came along transferred to their multi car policy.
Obviously type of car will make a difference ( all 3 had Fiestas ) but no need for black boxes.
Once test passed be prepared for large jump in premium.
Trick is to try and get them to their first year renewal loss free !
Confused . com and similar good place to start and then be prepared to have to shop around at renewal.
Thankfully no claims so cannot comment on Admirals claims service but their admin etc was great.
Good luck.

When my lad passed his test (at 17) we got him a cheap Renault Clio (02 plate) - the cheapest insurance quote we got was from Tesco, for £700 (the nearest next best was over a grand).
Tesco came with a fitted black box, and he got 'bonus' miles for good driving etc.
He had me as a named driver on it.

He stuck with them through 2 renewals (as they still worked out cheaper).

I think he is now with More-than. Has 6 years no claims.

Comparison websites.
Black box a must.
Waiting until 18 makes £000's difference.
Play with adding parents, one by one, then both, simply to see what difference it makes.

Quick update, Admiral look to be coming in with a great price on Confused.com, both parents added ( late forties....) cheaper than I thought

Check with Admiral to see if they now accrue NCB for policy holders under age 21.

They didn't used to and it will cost you at renewal.

Ticker are good.

Black box but it just sticks to the windscreen so they send it to you in the post.

Has anyone tried driving with a black box?
My friend said its lucky that he pays his step daughters insurance, he was waiting for his new car and used her car for a week, its a 1.0 Fiesta, he drove how he would normally drive his 3 series, not speeding or anything, just not hanging round, the stats were pretty bad for the week.

Another vote for Ticker.

We used Covered On Demand for her my daughter on my wife's car when she was learning.

She passed her test just after her 18th birthday, and ended up with a 12 plate Fiesta Zetec 3dr. Her choice.

We pay just over £900, me and my wife as named drivers.

Some black boxes restrict night-time use I believe, so watch for this.

Ticker is just a stick on box, connected to an app that sends driving info to them, so it needs to be on other drivers phones as well. We are mileage limited to 6k pa, but that's no problem. No curfews.

Hope this helps.

The box doesn't just measure overall speed. They'll do a calculation based on the time of day (overnight carries more risk), harshness of braking or accelerating, whether or not long journeys are broken up, whether the car is on a motorway or 'surface' street, how many miles covered, how many journeys made... It's an overall picture, not just one aspect.

They are all different and measure different things. But as anyone in the industry will tell you, it doesn't really matter. 95% of the job is done by filtering out the young drivers who refuse you have a black box. You're then left with the sensible ones who are prepared to stick to speed limits etc in order to save money on their insurance. And you've avoided the morons. You could fit a dummy box, so long as the driver didn't know, and the results would be the same!

Another vote for Admiral, was affordable enough without the black box. For some reason it was only 10 months cover in the first year and after that they credited a year's NCB. Price dropped by 70% by the third year of cover. Fiesta 1.2

With my kids cars two of them have black boxes. I'm not on neither policy due to claims but I can drive their car on my policy with TP cover. One of them has Ticker and I got them to ask the question what happens when my Dad drives the car on his insurance but obviously doesn't have the app. Their answer was he has to download the app.... but I'm not on the ticker policy I said... makes no difference. Not sure how it makes a difference. Not a huge issue as I only tend to drive it when going to the garage or somethings wrong with it.
