One other benefit of retiring early. I went for my regular blood pressure check yesterday and it was genuinely the lowest it's been since I was first diagnosed with hypertension smile

It was such a big change the nurse checked it 3 times!

Very thought provoking post. I'm mid 30s and thinking along similar, less drastic lines. Going to spend a few more years minimising outgoings, paying down the mortgage, getting past any big financial commitments then look into re-training.
Only you can make it happen so good that you are already thinking about it. I can say with confidence that you will have no regrets, there is nothing more satisfying or rewarding than being in control of your own destiny.

If you want it to work you will make it work smile

Yep, not as easy to do then as now. If we could have foreseen what was coming post-2008, we'd all have bought as many houses we we possibly could.
Also, would have purchased shares in ‘Apple’..!!!

But, no one knows what’s down the line.

Sorry to bounce my own thread, but I wondered how people were feeling on the work front right now?

Since Covid started I’ve gone from competitive workaholic to completely losing interest. It all feels a bit empty, being on zoom calls all day is st, I realised how little I need, and I care less about status.

The thought of ever getting up at 6.30am 5 days a week, schlepping into the office and being in meetings all day is completely alien and I don’t see myself doing it again.

I’m thinking about early retirement or switching to something simple like airport runs to cover living expenses. A big step and change in outlook for me but maybe a good one.

I wondered if anyone else finding themselves in a similar mindset the more this goes on?

Not sure there are many airport runs at the moment.

I agree with you that this year has been a good chance to re-evaluate life, work is just a means to an end for me, I used to be quite obsessive about it but it does seem quite pointless much of the time. Several colleagues have been seriously ill with Coronavirus related diseases that have severely impacted their lives and four recently retired people have died which made me realise that I don’t want that for me and would rather have a lengthy retirement even at a reduced pension.

Well Covid for me has been something of a benefit. I have my own business so have always been flexible location wise but my partner is a lecturer so has always been required to be in uni for face time face lectures.

Since they moved online we departed the U.K. ans have lived in my Spanish house for the last 6 months and it’s been very pleasant. Sadly (for me) my partner is intent on remaining U.K. her career so once lectures are back face to face we will be forced back to the U.K. but I can certainly see some evaluation of how we live on the back of this charade.
