Any comment from the folks saying cashless is fine with them about World Pay fiasco with Brighton pier. Yes they will return of the money removed because of the glitch, but it will take a few days to restore funds to those who have had accounts emptied and worse. Then there's the issue of all the knock on charges and aggro for people where other payments have been refused as a result.
To me this is just another reason to use a credit rather than debit card. Money never leaves your account while it's being resolved.

What annoys me is that they deliberately make using them as inconvenient as possible and then cite declining customer numbers as a reason to close it when it is blatantly obvious that they just wanted to save money.

Electronic banking is all well and good until there is no electricity or someone decides your bank balance is £0.
Electronic banking, in the terms you refer, is only the method by which you manage your money.

Even if you avoided internet/electronic banking, and just paid in and withdrew cash at the counter, you could still wake up one morning and find that your balance was £0 via some error, but that has been the case for probably 50 years or more.

The only solution to your worry about waking up to a computer error that says you have £0, is by not using a bank.

I don't think most people would want to keep £50k, £100k, £500k or whatever at home under their mattress.

I agree, for many purchases, including in store/in person a Credit Card is the thing to use.

I would also say that PayPal is absolutely invaluable for online purchases as well. I have used it for years, and I find two big advantages:

One is that it makes buying stuff from most online stores as simple as a few clicks rather than creating an account, creating a password, filling in address, filling in billing address, giving card details etc. You just click ‘Pay by PayPal’ and that’s it. Your details and delivery address are all pulled from PayPal. Saves so much time and effort.

Second, is it gives extremely good consumer protection. Similar, or perhaps better, than a credit card. Previously I have had products that have gone faulty or been substandard, complained to PayPal and within a day or so they are telling the vendor to refund me, and if that doesn’t happen, they just give me my money back and take it off the vendor. They seem to have an awful lot of clout for dealing with stuff like that.

A branch doesn’t use a paper ledger you know.
