Mobile phone roaming charges being introduced.
I’m with Three. They charge 2 per day whilst abroad to use your phone. Doesn’t sound much, except now retired I want to spend the best part of 6 months in Spain, so that’s 60 per month x 6 = 360 x two phones = 720 per year! Because I’ve had a contract with Three for a few years, if I stay on this contract then I continue to pay nothing. There’s going to have to be a big incentive to for me to ever change this sim only contract.

If you've got a phone that has an eSIM you can load cheap data plans. With Ubigi it's $9 for 3GB for 30 days or $22 for 10GB in Spain.
I have a separate phone in Spain on a PAYG contract with Hits. I can call anywhere in the world for a few cents a minute but still need access to my UK phone. Phil. said:

That’s the point with the eSIM, admittedly only good for data, but you keep your main SIM from the U.K. (or Switzerland in my case) running so people can still call you and text you, but the eSIM handles the data and is cheap. Works with WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage etc as well as for browsing and whatever apps need internet access. Whistle said:
I have an iPhone 13 pro and I believe I can set up an esim for data when I go to the USA next month.
Any ideas how I do this ?
Thanks
Google best eSIM data packages US and see what comes up. I just looked in the Ubigi app and it’s $14 for 3GB or $33 for 10GB. I don’t know how competitive that is, but it was straight forward to follow the steps to set it up. I think you just download the app, set up an account and then it takes you through a few stages to provision the eSIM. Once it’s all set up, you just choose the Ubigi data provider in settings and use the app to buy a data package. Any ideas how I do this ?
Thanks
You've beaten me to it; just come back from a few days in Spain and my new personal phone is with o2 and no charges for roaming. Our friends who have a villa out there got caught as they were with another network, so have swapped to o2 specifically due to the roaming. It just happened that I got my bill this morning and sure enough all the data and one phone call appear with no charges (not that I'm cynical or anything!).
Have been to my son's (2 year delayed) graduation on Monday, off to the airport Monday evening and just back early this morning. While away some other friends messaged about a gig tonight, so we're off to that this evening, then tomorrow morning off on our 'original' post retirement break down in Sussex for 3 nights. The original plan was the graduation, then Sussex trip but opportunity to do these extra things popped up: Had I been at work, even assuming holiday could be taken at short notice I'd probably have given it a miss on the grounds of just being too tired to be bothered to go. At least I'm keeping with the thread title.

Well I’m 54 today so I think I can officially 365 days until I can retire !
I am older than you. Could have retired and started chipping away at my pension. It is still intact however. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the thought of this being it, this being the downward slope to death, scares the bejesus out of me.
This is in part driven by the realisation that I cannot live the rest of my life in the manner of my choosing, unless I stay industrious. Also, I get a buzz from being in business.
I was planning a new venture this morning and it made me want to go for a long, brisk walk, rather than vegging out in front of the news, whilst breakfast was being cooked.
When we are green, we grow. When we ripen, we rot.
Now watch me get run over by that bus.

Quite the opposite for me. Retired at 50 and and I am quite a lot greener / healthier / happier than when I was while still working. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the thought of this being it, this being the downward slope to death, scares the bejesus out of me.

It's entirely possible to go for a long brisk walk while retired. I'm fact I do that most days!
Walked five miles this morning with the dog, down to the beach.
Deck crew on a steamship this afternoon, taking passengers out for a three hour cruise.
Tomorrow driving miniature trains at a local industrial museum.
The ship and the trains were both taken up after retirement and something completely new to me.
Off to Crete in a couple of weeks for a rest!
