Enjoying Retirement
Discussion
Twig ,most impressed with your day yesterday and don't think unproductive at all - other than sore feet and feeling knackered probably did you good and just sums up what not having to work for a living can mean !
On our couple of nights away last week , on the first morning ( we were staying in Rutland ) we did a 5 mile walk , popped into a pub for a reviving drink then walked another couple of miles , and then had tea and cake back at the hotel -our first break since retirement and my wife said she had never seen me so relaxed.

I'm 55 and haven't worked for almost a year now. Got a couple of nice motorbikes and recently bought a V12 Aston but I must admit whilst the weather holds my toys keep me busy but I'm already starting to get a bit bored.
My wife still works which doesn't help as she is still tied so I'm on my own so to speak.
I've got some refurbishment plans for our house which I will leave until winter (when I can't get out on the toys) but I feel next year I need to plan some adventures or trips to keep myself busy.
Having a happy retirement requires a little more thought than you might expect

We're off on a cruise this Friday around the Med so got the Tux dry cleaned for the formal nights.
Horses for courses, but I wouldn't dream of going on any holiday where I had to pack a tie, let alone a tux. The thought of a floating Petri dish rammed with thousands of people being entertained non stop sounds like holiday hell not heaven to me. I'll be sticking with quiet off the beaten track holiday destinations where both weather and formality requires nothing more than shorts, T shirts and lots and lots of factor 30 all day.

Horses for courses indeed - and nope, me neither.

We have that booked for Sept, a small hotel on a remote part of Antigua (although I'm happy in a small tent in the foothills of the Pyrenees). The cruise thing is marmite I accept however there are cruise lines that are far from being 'rammed with thousands of people being entertained non stop', no more petri dish than a large hotel in size or numbers.
I've no issue with formality on a couple of nights, no one forces you to partake and in many decent hotels worldwide you're required to make an effort at least for dinner ie no shorts. That's the beauty of retirement you can go where and when you want.

That sounds perfect! My wife keeps asking me if I'm bored. I'm not it's just some days I choose not to do very much as I don't have to and I'm very comfortable with that. Jaguar steve said:

The first time I went on a cruise I wasn't really looking forward to the formal evening, but in the end I actually enjoyed it and the cruise in general. As my son was young at the time we shot a 30 seconds video version of The Titanic for a bit of fun (I copied a cartoon version I'd found on the web by 'Angry Rabbits' I think it was). We've done a few cruises since, but I've had enough of them now...considering that I'm ex-Navy I suppose it was a bit of a busman's holiday for me.
I changed from wanting holidays that explored the area, to more chilling out by the sea/pool, but I suspect that now I'd be back into my former exploration mode again. We're planning a 5-6 week trip away next spring that will take in Australia visiting SIL/BIL and various other places there and back to explore, but waiting (yes, still waiting!) for probate to come through, so we know what we can afford to put aside for this trip.
I'm just hoping for a bit more sun at home as I have a few outside jobs I'd like to get on with before a visit to see family at the end of the week. I worked myself to a stop doing stuff on our 'new' car, but there is nothing left to clean, polish or service (at least until some parts arrive), so I think I'll have a lazy day today, maybe a walk later.
