I am happy to say that I will be joining the ranks enjoying retirement tomorrow. Returning computer and phone and that will be it. “What are you going to do?” - “Whatever I want!” I certainly don’t have a grand plan, just intend to enjoy the summer and try to work out the new dynamic of no more 9 to 5 after 40 years with the same company.
I think it will be a bit strange not having the comfort of a monthly salary, but my calculations indicate everything should work out OK and when I get my state pension in 2 years time I will be fine.

Maxwell
Well how does it feel, 8am on a Monday morning?

8am? Now he's retired he can get up when he wants, except on Wednesdays, when he'll get rudely awakened by the dustmen.

Must be a lovely feeling to wake up on your first day of retirement.

I'm 3yrs away, but there'll be no laying in each morning for me sadly, as 'Peter the enlarged prostate' and 'Berty the bladder' collude with each other and always wake me up around 6am frown

Yes but when you retire you can go back to bed. As opposed to now when you have to think is it worth going back to bed knowing you have to get up by a certain time.

I am sat here in my dressing gown and will have a shower a bit later. As opposed to when I was working when I still might be in my dressing gown and not yet had a shower, because my phone hasn't stopped ringing and everyman and his dog needs their problem sorting now.

It’s a great feeling, that Monday morning when you don’t have to get on line to find out what needs fixing for this week and realise that you will never need to do that again! A leisurely day today after a wonderful family party to celebrate yesterday. Tomorrow we are off to our little cottage in Yorkshire for a couple of weeks with various works planned for the garden, happy days!

Sounds like a mighty fine start to Enjoying Retirement!

We head to Reeth in about a month to help some pals of ours who have a small place there…..it’s a lovely part of the world, some lovely walks & pubs.

Don’t forget some fantastic driving. Luckily we are not overrun by tourists, but it is a big county.

I had to do some research on Rose and Valerie as I must confess I have never read through the lyrics. Maxwell was my first car (a 1960 Morris Minor) and a friend made a silver hammer which I was going to mount on the dashboard. Regrettably Maxwell was stolen, but this was before the hammer was fitted, so I still have it.

But that’s fine because he just has to put his trousers on and maybe have a cup of tea, before possibly thinking about leaving the ouse - all to his own schedule now, though!

For me “to your own schedule” is one of the very best things about being retired and thus being beholden to nobody else.

My wife deals with the household and garden waste bins on Sunday evening, ready for the dustmen at around 7:00 Monday morning. They may disturb me, such that I turn over in bed and get back to my dream!

BTW: what's "a schedule"?

Excellent - the “danger” of being retired can be that all those little jobs that you have put off “I will do it when I retire” become big jobs!

Whilst not having to stick to a schedule, we have found that we can get quite busy and still have to book things on the calendar to do - mind you going away does interfere with plans!

Just back from a few days in Iceland and now have to hope for some decent weather to do the spring garden stuff before a cruise at the beginning of May!

Yes, since retiring in November, I'm finding I have to use a calendar for personal stuff for the first time ever. I always used to arrange personal stuff around my work before.
