I'm moving over to California for 10 months from August as part of my University course - attending San Jose state University.

Whats the best way to spend over there?

Is it worthwhile getting a credit card free of USD charges and pay off from the UK or am i best to just convert cash over and open a US bank account..?
Was just curious as to what others may have done?

Cheers in advance,

Cheers in advance,
When I moved out there for a few years I had my HSBC branch set me up a US account over there.
Then it was a relatively simple task to transfer funds between my UK and US accounts (all could be done on-line).

Enjoy your time over there, its a great place. Don't forget to go to a frat party and fall asleep on some roof top hugging a keg of beer. Got to be done. smile

I'd open up an American Bank Account, all you need is a passport, Cell number and "permanent" street address. Takes 10 mins, you'll have cheque books to take home with you and the embossed debit card will be with you in around 3-4 days. I suggest Wells Fargo or WaMu.

Once you have that I'd look into a County Credit Union and join them, they have fewer charges and offer better savings rates than any of the US banks.
