Credit card for online purchases?

Not that I'm planning on buying Olympic tickets but I did wonder if Mastercard vs. Visa is an issue at all these days?

It isn't ... Unless you want to buy Olympic tickets. Otherwise, I have found equal acceptance here and abroad.

You can transfer back to your bank or just leave it there an top up for the next purchase.

I also use it when travelling rather than debit cards, far safer.

my dad has a HSBC VISA credit card with £300 limit for his (rare) internet purchases and another one for his normal purchases

a low limit can be a bad idea. shops still let the purchases go through, and you then get fines added to the bill you have to convince the bank about as well. I think a pre-paid card would be better for him as they really do refuse if the limit is breached.
