Hello PH,

After successfully selling my ikea single beds from my spare room in 5 hours on Gumtree (a record for me), I need to find the best solution for my now vacant spare room.

I previously had two single beds that just took up too much room.

I now want to get a single spare bed that has a pullout option to house anyone that stays.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

We bought a decent quality Sofa Bed. By decent I mean really good - the best we could afford. Decent mattress, solid frame. Looks good as well.

Takes a minute to make up and, as we keep the books in that room, makes a useful place to sit and read the rest of the time.

We bought this one:

IMO, shun the sofa bed as if it was a fat ginger. Noone ever gets a decent nights sleep on one!

Single divan with under bed single bed affair - then you have twin, double, single options. Plus, your guests get a proper matress, rather than 4 wires, a spring, 58p in loose change, and the remote to the VCR.

When it came to deciding on a bed for our spare room and with a standard double being too big, a single being too small we opted for a large single which is just over 3ft wide, we did look at a 4ft (small double) but this was just a bit too wide.
These have a range of guest and small double beds...

I have supplied this product in the past. Awesome, if at the higher end of the price scale.

That's only true if you're a cheap-skate!

The ususal issues are crap mattress and size. After we got ours my folks came to stay (late 50s) and they found it to be incredibly comfortable - Dad even commented on having a great night's sleep.

They bought a similar, but cheap one that has a crapper mattress and is smaller. When we've visited I've been unable to return the compliment!

You get what you pay for.

^^ Very true. My parents converted my old bedroom into another office when I moved out and got a Ligne Roset Sofa bed like this.

I recentley used it for a month when I went to visit the area with the girlfriend and it was great. Larger than a regular double bed, very comfy and stood up well to our 'vigorous sleep'.

Pretty much exactly what we did. The room gets used most days now. It wouldn't if it just had a bed in it.

We have a sofa bed which works quite well, but with limited space, and if I really wanted to use the room as a study or for a hobby, I might go for a wall bed or similar

An air bed is a viable option -easily inflated with an electric pump, comfortable enough for an overnight/wwekend stay. Added benefit that you can use it if you go camping too smile packs away easily and is cheap biggrin

We have one of these

We have it set up as a proper sofa, but it's a good sized single bed. The curved bit underneath pulls out to make a king size (both beds same length, not the usual one 6" shorter than the other). The drawers are real as well, and are massive.

Unless the ginger element is the key factor, I'd second a decent sofa bed. And also second John Lewis. Have had mine for 10yrs and every time people use it they say how comfy it is.

If ginger people are the particular problem element, just don't invite them round to stay. Win win biggrin

I have one of these in my spare room as well. It is fantastic. Most of the time (when the flat isn't in turmoil) it is set up as a sofa, but it does get used as a bed quite a bit as well.

The drawers are indeed MASSIVE, and the whole thing is really comfy to sleep on. Nice big bed when its all pulled out. Only thing is there is the danger of falling down the gap between the two matteresses in the middle of the night.

Hi,

There is a sofa bed thats designed to be used everyday as a bed and a sofa, take a look at http://www.thesofabed.com , unlike most sofa beds, they look amazing and are really comfy as a sofa.

The mattress is 14cm deep and 2m long, I don't think you'd find anything better than that!

Love the cool animation on the website.
