The definitive low-energy GU10 lighting thread

Consider the icage as it's open backed while being fire and acoustic rated, the more common enclosed designs may reduce lamp life through inadequate ventilation/ running hotter. I fit them all the time where people aren't opting for contained fittings

Thats all I fit. Our local dealer has some IP rated ones for £3.50 at the moment but they are bigger and I've already cut 20 holes....Damnhttp://www.fastlec.co.uk/lighting/downlights/low-e...

Thanks for that. I was considering Philips bulbs togo in the holders, out of supplied bulbs on the site do any of those bulb chipsets compare?
The megamans are worth the extra- one of the wholesalers I use swears by them and they'll be the first to know when stuff fails to meet expectations. Plus the 7w is rated 550 lumens which not much else comes near.Harry Flashman said:
Chaps, would you mind posting pictures of your "warm white" LEDs in action. I am struggling a bit as everything I have seen is too cold, to my eyes, when compared with halogen.

Anyone had any issues with contacting Ecoled?
One of my units failed, tried emailing Guy but no reply recently (he did reply a few weeks back saying Tech Support would call me but never heard anything) - emailed him a week or so back, and emailed their general email last night with no reply as yet.

I'm struggling chaps, please help.
I need GU10, long barrel "light bulbs" to replace the ones that are going. (I'm down to 4 of 6 remaining!) They're currently quite old 11W energy saving thingys that take ages to warm up.
I had Megaman LED bulbs, but they've all strobed and died within about 12 months. (Not all at once.)
I'm looking for a power equivalent to what I have, but LED, and warm white. What do I get?
Budget wise, lets look mid-range. I want them to last years, so not too cheap, but I'm also not made of money.
Any advice welcome!

Whilst this thread has been bumped I thought I'd just say that I've just replaced the 9 halogen GU10s in my kitchen with these from Screwfix:

Also changed the dimmer module in the switch to a Varilight VPro. All I can say so far is that these are brilliant. So much more light for so much less power. I went for the cool white as I think they're better suited to a kitchen. I'll be replacing all the other halogen GU10s in our living area (15 of them) for the warm white versions of these at some point in the future.
On offer at the moment for £2 per bulb provided you buy a box of 10. Amazing value.

I was lucky enough to get a batch of high spec led chroic bulbs from Aurora they have a clearance website if you google it.
They were GU10s rrp of £40 and I bought 15 for £3.99 each!!!
They had been superseded and were non dimmable but the quality of light is very very good and they have a lens which looks like halogen.
Annoyingly they don't seem to sell them anymore and I want another 20! But if anyone knows where they can be got I highly recommend them. They were warm white with a very appealing warth not a yellow or green cast that megaman or aurora enlite bulbs produce IMO.

Where is good to get Gu10 LED bulbs these day? Are there any brands that are better/more reliable? I did have some LAP ones from Screwfix to replace some Aurora bulbs, but they weren't great. The first LAP one needed to be replaced before the last Aurora one died.
As I am only replacing as I go, I guess I need to match wattage and colour temperature etc. Or would slight differences not be noticed.
Whist I have the attention of LED experts, I would like to replace the bulbs in my outside lights, with normal energy saving bulbs they take a while to warm up when triggered by the PIR. I tried swapping to cheap LED bulbs, but they flicker when they are waiting for the PIR to trigger them. Is the a bulb or fittings problem? If bulbs, can you recommend any that wouldn't do this?
