We brought half of two of our neighbours gardens last year due to wanting to put a conservatory on the back of our home and the fact the garden was far two small for a family. We are finally having them landscaped this week and we will have a lawn for the first time in a few years. Its only gona be a smallish lawn (8m x 7m) but will need cutting none the less. Can anyone recommend me a new mower that will do a reasonable job at a reasonable price, oh and the Mrs would like it to do lines.

A rolled up fifty works better.

I've got a petrol Mountfield from B&Q...has been ok but I have read they are inferior Chinese versions.

They also do a green cheaper make in B&Q, I used one last year and was impressed with it, for the money it costs.

eta

cheaper one:

Prett much the same requirements as me.

I'm considering a hayter spirit auto drive with roller, but would be great to get some opinions.

272 for the push version. 349 for the auto drive version (more likely to get the missus to use it once in a while )

I'd buy a used Hayter and have it serviced.

I wanted the same, I found a used Hayter Harrier on eBay, needs a little work and is tatty but I won the auction at 80, and when I went to pick it up today, the charming chap apologised that the clutch cable was in a worse state that he'd thought and kindly knocked 20 off! smile

You don't really have enough room to justify a ride-on with a roller (that defines the "lines").

If the missus really wants them, tell her to grab a stiff brush and drag it up and down the lawn.

just been looking for a mower myself, speaking to a few (old!) people Honda kept being talked about as being the best.. however pretty pricey for what i wanted (petrol, self propelled and decent enough stripes) so went for a Hayter instead, which also came recommended but cheaper than a Honda.

.. i couldnt justify a ride on mower, though i would have looked more into them if the mrs would have let me customise it with a beer holder, strap on radio and let me wear a Stetson

Does that mean it's overpriced, overrated, or both?! wink

I have a 15yr old Qualcast with a Briggs & Stratton motor - most of the green paint has peeled off the now rusty metal deck and the engine can be a little smoky, but it's lucky if it's had an oil change/service twice in it's lifetime and still soldiers on regardless.

This is the one i have been considering. Let me know how you get on!. My rear lawn is currently a mud bath:

I'm holding off buying a mower until the land drainage is installed, and i'm just using my trusty Bosch Rotak Electric for the front.

Its bleedin brilliant!.. first cut in many months and looked really nice.
- we're in a new house and so its the first time i've used a mower in about 8 years - always hated mowing before so got rid of all the grass at last place, and wasnt looking forward to the job at the new house but have to say im seriously impressed with the Hayter. Didnt take long to do at all, and was so easy (with it being self propelled) you just have to keep it going in a straight line - although i need more practice! biggrin

Excellent. It shall remain at the top of my list. Always great to hear from someone who has actually got one!
