After getting some rediculous quotes for one room I'm thinking of having a go at doing the ceiling on my own.

Could a competent DIY'er do plastering?
I've previously fitted a boiler, double glazed windows, carpets, wood flooring etc so am quite good at it.

Has anyone attempted it?

I'm aware that you pay for a skill but you could say that about all DIY.

Plastering a ceiling is something I'd always pay for TBH. I'll DIY anything normally but plastering a ceiling is a recipe for disaster, I repaired a small section once and it was a nightmare!

Plasterboard over the top then skim. Joints on the joists.

ETA: One of the jobs best left to the pro's though, not worth the hassle. What exactly are the rediculous (sic rofl) prices? I had 3 ceilings and hall/landing and kitchen done for £300. Not worth my time DIY for that price.

i also thought myself quite handy until we recently got the house 'professionally' decorated. made me realise that im a total amateur.

point is that depending on your standards you may get the job done yourself but depends on how good you want it done. if the ceiling is not right trust me you'll keep staring at it in the dark when the lights are on wishing you had a pro to do it so you wouldnt have those weird shadows on what should otherwise be a flat surface!

ift its small in a not too important give it a go otherwise might be worth paying someone

What prices were you getting back? If it's just one ceiling in good order and only wants skimming then it's no more than a days work. £150-£200 tops.

Personally I've laboured for a plaster on umpteen jobs. I've had many attempts and even now I wouldn't do mine own house!

My brother went on a plastering course and still can't plaster for toffee because he's not had that much experience, it's one of those things you'll do 100 times and mess it up 99 of those then the 100th will be perfect.

Get a man in.

I have done quite a bit of wall diy plastering, but I wouldn't attempt a ceiling.
Depending on the light fiiting on the ceiling, any imperfections will really show.

£275 and £250 for one ceiling 2.5m by 3m.

Oddly my dad is a plasterer but lives on the IOM.
He said they were "taking the piss".

Doesn't sound very cheap, but...

If it's 2 guy teams then your job is gonna take the best part of a day , certainly enough that they won't get onto another job that day. So you're paying a day rate for them both.

I had a small ceiling done in my house last year, 2m by 2m. Cost £120. Two guys stopped off on their way home from another job and did it whilst passing. Toook them 3 hours mind. In which case £120 for 6 manhours doesn't sound expensive to me.

Might be worth you doing what I did, put the job on line (tradeperson.com or somthing like that) and see how many bites you get. I got about 20 people chasing that job and chose the ones that could get round the soonest.

Oh... and DO NOT GET TEMPTED TO TRY YOURSELF. You will only make a fking awful job of it and everyone who ever sees it will ask you just who the fk made that mess of the ceiling and ask whether it's supposed to be artex or plaster. smile

Tressles and planks the length of the room so that you can trowel in one sweep.

Good friend of mine thought the same as you.

His ceiling now looks like the alps inverted, with the tips sanded off where he has spent approx £30 on sanding pads to dry and flatten it, makes so much dust he ends up doing this in his pants with a tesco bag on his head.

Hes Irish, say no more.
