Hi Guy's

As some of you may know I moved into Putney in January, I live in a two bed, en suit, balcony in a new development. It is furnished.

I always though I might be paying a little more than I should and today within the main building I see a penthouse up for rent, same size but two balcony's. This is 50 more and is inclusive of council tax. It is part of the same development, built same year etc.

Obviously I am a little pissed, so what can I do? Are there any laws on this or is it my fault for not doing enough research? I understand that markets change but to me I have only been paying rent for two months so I see this price comparison as unreasonable.

Thanks

David

No regulation as far as I'm aware?
Supply and demand.
The only way to renegotiate, would be to prepare to move.
New York has maximum rent laws, but I'm not aware of any in the UK? Very happy to be corrected.

You looked at a flat, knew the price, agreed to it and signed up.

That, I'm afraid, is that.

Would you renegotiate your flight price when the person sitting next you braggs how little they paid?

Yep. Would you offer to pay more if you saw another one your size being advertised for more money?

At least we're agreed on that.

Paying 24K a year rent makes the difference guys. This isn't the difference of 20 quid on a flight.

It's a free market - someone advertised something that you agreed to. You never know - the person who owns the penthouse may be in desperate need for any income so is selling himself short??

Thanks for the insight, I guess it boils down to not being happy with my place.

Wow! £400 a month here, water/council tax included.

Are you not happy with the place or not happy with the deal you got (two different things).

It's like when I buy a new car, the thing I never do is look at the same vehicles just after picking the new one up - it ALWAYS ends in disaster hehe

Yeah I know mate, affordable but verging on idiotic. Dont know how long I will be in the UK so there is no use in buying and London is far to pricey without a deposit.

No lanky streak of piss, now off to use my bike to wheel a desk two miles through Putney.

In your position I would probably move to the one that is £50 more. Probably be able to knock them down to the same price you are paying now - if you really are paying 2k a month. Plus the council tax savings...

How long is your notice period on the current place - do you not just quit the current one and move - surely this flexibility is largely the point in renting?
