Paying 24K a year rent makes the difference guys. This isn't the difference of 20 quid on a flight.

You're paying £2k a month to rent a two-bed flat in Putney?

biggrin Some funny replies here.

This is the same scenario, no more no less, as buying a car really.

You buy one you like, you see a better one a week later for less money. Annoying, but you can't go back to the seller and ask for some money back!

No one is forced to buy cars or houses or rent flats. You do the deal, the deal is done. I would imagine your landlord would not entertain any kind of reduction!

If one of my tenants asked for a reduction because of another flat coming on the market for whatever price - I'd happily tell them that if they are not happy then please feel free to move. But there won't be a rent reduction anytime soon!

It is a really nice development but you guys are right its not worth 2K a month. I wanted to live close in but the German GF decided that this was it. Fack

Depends on the rent the landlord is asking. If they have put their place on the market above an equivelant property and it been standing empty for 6 months because of that. If the person who took it feels that they could get another place for less money they might be willing to bend a little to save it being empty for the next 6 or how many months it would take to get another tennant.

There's a simple answer for the OP - you can complain all you want but it probably won't lower the rent. You paid market price. If the penthouse flat was being offerred for a grand a month more, would you have a bargain for that block of flats? Probably. But are you paying too much for your earnings? If you're on here complaining about being skint then almost certainly.

Take it on the chin and start looking to get out of there at the earliest possible opportunity.

Far from skint, I earn enough to pay the rent and not worry about cash flow however the gripe I have is exactly as stated above 2k in Putney is pricey and I could be living closer in the city or in a penthouse for the same price.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll do better research on my next place.

The only benefits I renting has imho is:

  1. If you can't afford a place
  2. To have the flexibility of moving out when something better comes up
If I'd have to pay £ 2000/month, I'd either want it to be mine or be able to get of there within 6 months.

Check your AST agreement. You may only have to give 2 months notice to move out. So you could still get the penthouse before June.

All the more reason you would take care of prices when you signed up surely?
I am sympathetic, that would be infuriating but I would also imagine that you looked at other places at the time and the price seemed okay?
You have no idea of the circumstances behind the other one for rent. They might need to rent it out instantly for some reason or who-knows what.

Agree completely with Famous Graham- If your landlord realised he had rented the flat out too cheaply, would you be happy to pay £500 more?

I sympathise, but the price of the other flat really is irrelevant.

Don't mock him too much and make people move further out- they are the ones keeping the countryside uncluttered.

This is the mob you need OP

Although, even if you do have your rent assessed as unfair, the chances of the Tenancy being subsequently renewed are probably zero.

Just seems like you're not happy with the deal that you got. I would express interest on the other flat if you are seriously interested in it.

To the SW15-deriders on here, £2k a month isn't a big deal for a 2-bed in Putney. It is by the riverside and has 1 (or 2 if you count East Putney) tube stations AND a train station - all in Zone 2. Okay for that money, you should also get a parking space or garage, but 24k a year is not ridiculous.

Seems mad to me. I have a nice 3 bed, 3 bath house with conservatory, garage and driveway, on the coast in the New Forest, (so 2 hours from London) and my 85% mortgage is half that! I really can't understand London. I don't get the attraction, or the prices.

Also, what I really don't understand, is how average or below average income earners survive in London. How can they even afford the rent? My girlfriends family all live in London and I don't know how they do it!

I wouldn't worry too much about the endless morons on here comparing their semi in Hull to a flat in Central London, EVERYTIME this st comes up the same arguments happen.

BUT there isn't anything you can do, just be prepared to walk next time you renew your contract.

I personally wouldn't want to live in Putney, its got nothing to it and is packed with foreigners that like fighting, but there's plenty of pricey property and plenty of people willing to pay it hence the demand. The flats by the bridge are worth millions.
