just tried to caulk a fairly wide bead of sealer around the bath , i messed around with it too much and it turned so went lumpy

can i caulk in a thin line to fill the gap , then a 2nd finishing bead at a later date , or does it all pickle up and go funny

You can't really layer up Silicone if that's what you mean.

Pull it off and start again.Put masking tape on the wall and bath leaving a gap which you fill with silicone. Wet your finger and smooth the silicone around putting the excess on some tissue paper. Remove the tape then run a wet finger around again to smooth the edges. Leave to cure for 24 hours. Job done.

If you haven't got one already, a decent gun like this helps a lot

Dear s3,

I'll take you on at the worlds worst caulker championships.
The only thing that happens when I approach silicone is a random application to me, the walls, a whole roll of kitchen paper and swearing, lots of swearing.

Whenever I can I use self adhesive silicone sealing strip on a roll,

regards,
Jet

I got one of these last time I sealed the bath.

Makes it much easier....well it did for me anyway.

Always use good quality sealant too.

Can't go wrong with Dow Corning stuff.

Never tried putting a second coat on, but what's the worst that can happen? It'll look crap. Whereas now it's????????????

If it were me, I'd get a sharp Stanley knife and just cut the existing stuff flush with the bath. Run the blad along flat to the bath with the knife tip just touching the wall so you remove the excess. Then mask the wall and the bath and apply your silicone as a previous poster suggested. Smooth with your finger and then remove the masking tape before it dries.

And Robert is your mothers brother.

I find it best not to touch it once you've taken the tape off till it dries but each to their own.

When I was in Ireland week before last, Aldi over there had a silicone remover kit, I bought it and re-did my bathroom, it works brilliantly.

Scrape it all off, clean and dry the area thoroughly, apply a thin bead along the bath in one continuous application, stick finger in gob and drag said finger across bead in one smooth motion, applying as little pressure as possible. It takes practice, but once you have mastered it, it is much easier than faffing about with masking tape.

My boss turned up with the exact silicone remover tool and lotion just the other week.
