When you rent from family , is it actually formal ?
I was wondering that. Did you get it a bit cheaper - maybe they're recovering the 'friends and family' discount?I wouldn't be charging them for the tea bags and so on in future but let us say that their Christmas and Birthday gifts might be less generous for a few years (ie more a bottle of JP Paintstripper than Barolo....)

Would one consider the taking of a Deposit as being a "comfy family arrangement"? I hardly think so, and the unreasonable deduction from the Deposit, only goes to confirm that to me. CraigVmax said:
i think yiou've done the right thing, less headache for yourself long term and no comebacks. Spend a lot of time round there leabing against it nonchalantely(sic?) though
... whilst pointing at it and saying "I paid for that I did". P.S. I bet it never gets changed out and the OP will be able to continually ask when they're intending to get round to fixing it with his £350.
That sounds shocking to me, especially as it was family, but I'm quite liberal.
Renting is a minefield and whilst I recently rented a room quite happily without any deposit protection in place (working away), wouldn't dream of doing this to my current tenant.
It's difficult to comment as you've not shown us a picture of the damage and we don't know the original value/quality of said fireplace. However, it would have been interesting to hear how they arrived at this figure.

As it happens we feel we were paying market rates, certainly no significant discount compared to other properties in the area.
Certainly won't be getting involved with them financially again.
Cant believe how indignant you are being when you have caused the damage. Sound like a right toe rag imo... Certainly won't be getting involved with them financially again.

Did you expect a discount? It obviously wasn't a bad deal when you accepted it. Or were you accepting the deal on the assumption that damaging stuff belonging to family would be less hassle than with a stranger?fido said:

Might like to re-read that as it reads like you're having a bit of a bad day. OP clearly doesn't feel like hes done £350 worth of damage, but he has coughed.
I'd be feeling slightly sore too! Think any of us would........especially where there is family involved.
that's why you try and keep financial matters with family to an absolute minmum.

I'd feel sore financially, but that doesn't mean i wouldn't cough up for damage that i caused. As for the 'secondhand argument' it's been answered previously .. either pay for a new one or get it back to the same condition it was before the damage was done.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
