Our small wood burning stove has suffered a cracked firebrick - it's at the rear of the fire and has a neat vertical crack through it. The crack is completely through the brick top to bottom and front to back.

The supplier for the part has quoted me £73 to replace but told me it isn't necessary to replace it with a single crack and confirmed I could cover it in fire cement. Elsewhere I've read that it's always necessary to remove a cracked brick.

Unfortunately it isn't a simple shape, so I can't source a new one easily from elsewhere.

Thoughts on cracks in firebricks?

As for fire cement, it seems to come in 1kg tubs - serious overkill!

You can get 750ml tubes of coloured stuff for about four times the price of the 1Kg tubs. Just buy the cheap stuff, use what you need to, and stick the rest in the shed biggrin
