Laminate Back Panels for fireplaces.

How are these installed?
I'm eventually going to have a new gas fire fitted but just wondering on various back panel options.
Are these laminate pieces simply screwed/fixed to the rebate of the fire surround with the actual fire just sitting in the gap?
Or can I glue it to a piece of mdf to give a bit of strength?
