Hi gang

I am looking to fit a runner to my stairs instead of carpet. Old carpet has been lifted and I have almost finished sanding the stairs (pain in the arse) ready to varnish, so now I am looking to fit the runner.

I plan to fit it myself (as I normally can't stand to part with money for something I can do myself. What I can't get me head around is how the runner works on the winders.

Due to the angle on the winders, as the runner hits the first winder it gets cut off at an angle (whilst being parallel to the stringers). The runner is then fitted to the riser, but, due to the angle, the width of the carpet at the nose of the tread is now wider than the width of the runner to be fitted to the riser.

How is this normally dealt with? I am sure there must be a trick of the trade, but a google search hasn't really shed any light on this issue.

Thanks

Lewis

Hi Skodasupercar, By the sound of your description of how you,ve tried fitting your runner, you are cutting it at the top of the riser underneath the protruding nose, and then I assume ,starting the next step from there. What you should be doing is treating one step as ,from the bottom of one riser ,up and along the tread to the bottom of the next riser. This way ,obviously one side is longer than the other (by side I mean the outer edge of the runner).Lay this piece squarely with the bottom of the riser and bring over to the bottom of the next riser down ,and cut off the excess. It,s a bit long winded to explain in words ,but I suggest you get something like a n old roll of wallpaper and have a go with that first ,to get an idea of what I,m trying to say and then progress onto the carpet to save wasting too much carpet trial and error-ing. Hopfully this is helpful.Good Luck wink
