Hi All
I am looking at buying an old victorian cottage that has 2 staircases where the stair depth is not very deep. ( I have to climb the stairs carefully with feet turned to the side on the step) Does anyone know about how much it might cost and whether it wouLd be posible to increase the depth, by ?adding to or changing the stairs. I appreciate they are narrow because the staircases are quite steep.
Would be nice to keep them looking old if at all possible!
Thanks for any thoughts
Sparky

If the stairs are uncomfortable because of the narrow tread, then making anew staircase with longer treads will make the distance of the total 'going' greater. Is there room to move the bottom of the stairs out about 1" times the number of steps?

What you are talking about is a new staircase.

Or take out the risers (if feasible) so his feet can go further forward?

I own a Victorian terrace with what sounds like a very similar staircase. I removed the carpets which gave me (just) enough space.
