So, who has had some work done by a tradesman that they are completely unhappy with and how did you handle it ?

We have had a new door fitted which is very poor both the door and the fitment. We expressed our concern and the tradesman is coming back to sort out some problems. On closer inspection, the reality is that it needs to be re-done. No money has exchanged hands yet.

How would you handle it (no puns)?

Its a tough one, depend if its a £100 door or a £700 door and whether its been made too small or just fitment issues. Also depends how much you paid in total really, a cheapie door plus furniture is about £150 and a days work £100-150pd depending on where you are.

Generally give him a chance to get it better, pay him and either get someone else in or fix it yourself. Don't use him again !

I kicked a plasterer off site recently (paid him), his mate let him in to collect his stuff while i wasn't there and he left a present under the floorboards. Luckily I found it while screwing everything down. It was a tin can filled with gripfill with an egg in it, the egg had a hole in the top, lid stuck back on with a hole in the lid. Basically a stink bomb that would smell for god knows how long. These are the types of people you have to deal with sometimes

Plumber came in to recommision our heating and gas system. Told me it was all sorted, but no hot water to kitchen sink - would be extra to diagnose and fix. Ok I said, until I went in the attic and found the ballcock in the hot water tank still tied off - plumber never went in attic despite being told the whole water and gas systems were drained off in December.
Several ignored calls and unanswered messages later, he answers to wifes mobile and gets both barrels from me - he was there that afternoon after I told him I was stopping his cheque there and then, and he would have to sue me for the costs. He (jokingly) threatened to cap the gas back off if I stopped the cheque, I (not so jokingly) threatened to have him arrested for interfering with the supply - a criminal offence somewhere in the Gas Regulations somewhere no doubt. We now have an understanding - he fixes things, I pay him once I am sure they are fixed. Once he has finished the boiler repairs, I will be finding an alternative plumber.

When we had a huge extension built (for a fixed price agreed with main contractor) we were happy with all aspects of the work except for the second fix joinery (skirting boards, architrave etc) as the sub contractor they used (whilst a nice chap) had the skills of a slightly below average DIYer.

Things like crap mitred and scribed joints.... Poorly fitting doors, badly aligned door furniture etc

I complained to the main contractor who agreed the work was poor and said he would get the subbie back in... Which he did and the second attempt was just as poor.

We then agreed to disagree with the contractor over the quality of the work, as he thought attempt 2 was "acceptable"

We withheld the money we had not paid until snagging was sorted (£3k!!) and I redid the work myself. Took me fooking ages as I am in "measure 20 times, cut once" school. And my efforts were significantly better than the contractors!

Doesn't sounds like it is someone's first time getting kicked off a site!

If he had put the same effort into his Plastering.......seriously though, lesson learnt for me on that one. ie don't trust recommendations, make your own judgement and don't let them back on site unsupervised.

Aye. I'd have been tempted to have a chat with his mate too. Can't imagine the plasterer won't have had a "this'll learn him" chuckle with him.

He can cap gas, but only with your permission. If he feels it's an Immediately Dangerous situation he can get National Grid to take the meter out. They can do this, it's not your property.
So yes, capping gas if you don't get paid is DEFINITELY a no-no.

Quite; you can't just stop people from heating their homes, any more than the water company can cut the water. He's a fool if he thinks otherwise.
