I have a feeling that there are some that have a reservoir that one can fill from a jug etc. Not certain, but it's a strong feeling none-the-less.
Yep, utterly pointless. Unfortunately, there aren't many that are sensibly priced but still plumbed in. Samsung and F&P are about the only ones I found.

Thanks for the heads up re the F&P one. Sadly, the £400 saving will be swallowed up by the mancave deficit wink

We have the panasonic american type fridge freezer, it's a lovely piece of kit- better built/finished than korean stuff but not as uncompromising as american kit, undercuts the germans on price (and is probably better). Oddball brand I know but panasonic inverters are rated as some of the best in the industry (A++ rated)

£80 water filter cartridge though, no cheap snides! Will fit a mains filter to the whole kitchen though so not a prob fr'us.

Also for those interested, ice machine removable for temp or perm more freezer space.

Recently swapped a Maytag for a Samsung, more or less identical external dimensions, but the Samsung is much bigger inside. When looking at the Samsung it seemed like a much better bet than the Maytag, but having used it for the past year or so it most definitely is not.

The Fridge layout is rubbish. The internal design is very poor. A pot of cream got knocked over and dripped down into the inards of the fridge. Had to completely empty the fridge and then dismantle the inside to get rid of the smell, the cream had eventually collected in the tray at the back on the bottom where excess water evaporates from. It had coated everything on the way down. Really very unpleasant.

Nearly brought the Panasonic equivalent, and probably should have done.

If you have the space, then Miele do separate side by side full height Fridge and Freezer, but that would be 1200mm wide instead of 915mm.

We have this LG which is a good layout and looks great in the metal.

Freezer space isn't huge but is feature rich and quite well made.

I have the fisher paykal shiwn earlier and i really like it.

Fitted various other fp fridges and nit had any problems - they can be a bit noisy on the fan, but not badly.

Liebherr are great too

The mother in law has a huge GE one, cost about £8k or something a few years ago, all plumbed in etc. it's the only one I've used that gives reliably decent crushed and cube ice as well as filtered water. Saying that the freezer is really poor for the cost IMO

This is a Fisher and Paykell fridge freezer I`ve just put in for a customer. The drawer at the bottom is the freezer and you get water from the door. The ice maker is inside though.

I have a pretty big kitchen so i can easily fit one in and it would look right at home, however the previous owners had a fancy SMEG thing so I would have to move a unit to make a bit more space but it's only a minor alteration.

So is it worth getting an American Style Fridge Freezer? i have heard good and bad things about them - i like the look for sure and you get the ice and water dispenser which i like, however i have also heard you have to bend down all the time for things like salad and stuff in the bottom of the door, also they only come in A+ energy rating at best.

What are people's opinions on them, both practical and otherwise?
We installed a Fisher & Paykel American fridge/freezer when installing this kitchen.

Other than the surround frame being a total pain in the butt to install, I was impressed with the quality of the product. (Something I can't say about their dishwater drawer appliances.)

One thing to remember. Most American style F/Freezers have doors that are very deep/thick, make sure with the gap you have for the appliance that there is still room for the doors to open fully. It can add 250MM required for the gap.

We've got a Bosch one. Looks very nice (ss) and I don't think was horrifically expensive.

We have this and whilst I never thought I'd say it... I love this fridge freezer. Open the doors and you can see everything. Bottom one side of the freezer can be a fridge also at the press of a button if you have lots of fresh food in and not too much frozen eg as at christmas...

Didn't go for the water feature as you have to plumb it in and it was more hassle than placing water in a bottle in the fridge... it does have an ice compartment though and all for £900

Re: those saying plumbing in is a massive hassle- it could be nothing more than a ten min job - depending on kitchen layout and proximity of water. Just splice in a tee and thread a bit of pipe behind the kickboard.

Do you find the location inconvenient?

Where in our current house it would be

Splice in a tee

Pull off the tiles from one wall
Cut a slot in the plasterboard
Run the pipe up the wall
Repair the plasterboard
Empty the bedroom
Lift the floor
Run the pipe across the ceiling
Put the floor back down
refill the bedroom
Cut a slot in the other wall
Drop the pipe down
Repair the other wall
retile the kitchen
redecorate the kitchen

job done

It's right in the middle of the room... What could be more convenient?
