Apply for a residency permit just like moving to any other country outside the EU, or before the EU existed.

OI why did Brexit affect his plans? Presumably he could still buy it and we're still in Europe for another 2 years.
I didn't sit down with him and go through his entire thought process, but basically something that was going to be piss easy became a looming mass of uncertainty and potential aggro, so he canned the idea. This was last summer (that house has been on the market at least a year).

Yes there's always a way if you're prepared to put yourself out to accommodate the lovely Brexiteers.

Not moving to France because it might involve a little paperwork? He would have got a shock if he ever wanted to get anything done with the house.

It's quite lovely isn't it. £320k. you get a lot for your cash! Mind you pretty sure France has some pretty nasty property taxes. NOt sure on the detail. My wife would love a place in France but the tax position has always put me off.

It doesn't. We pay for bin collection, and taxe fonciere, which is council tax, effectively. We get 50% off it because it's a second home, and both of those together cost less than the council tax on my home in the UK.

Mind you, we're not in Normandy. We're in a part of France which doesn't have English weather smile

Subsequent crash in the pound and uncertainty about future healthcare costs might also be worth considering.

Weird decoration too, starts off with a very cheap looking hallway laminate bought from B&Q then on to white leather and glass for the lounge, then on to the nut brown and lime kitchen then eventually a dining room that looks straight out of Mrs buckets house.

I presume the owner is blind?

The plot is excellent. I guess you could demolish it.

Well I think this could be great with a little cash being spent on renovations.

This is the crux. Healthcare. Retirement abroad is about to become the preserve of only those wealthy enough to pay for private healthcare abroad. Why did so many more Brits choose retirement in Spain rather than Florida, where there's no language barrier? Healthcare. What kind of Brits retire in Florida anyway? Those able to afford the healthcare. Now, EU countries will become as difficult to retire in as the rest of the world always was.

Hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions, of British citizens have been able to retire in the EU up until now with reciprocal healthcare arrangements. That is going in the bin. People are returning from Spain in droves, France too. They're heading back for the NHS whilst huge amounts of foreign NHS and care home staff head back the other way. fking ace, eh?

Those of us of lesser means will have to give up on searching for foreign property pron for our retirement now. But at least we'll be eating bendy bananas in Mansfield in the rain, right?
