Small, expensive, but perfectly formed. I love the design on this one.

Have they got Listed Building Consent for that satellite dish?! redcard

Definitely a sympathetic treatment, good use of materials, much to admire. Slightly struggling to see why the house was listed in the first place, unless it's something to do with the interior or historical significance, but I imagine they had to work pretty hard to get it through. And as a contrast with the others posted, very instructive. I think it was Gore Vidal who said "It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail."

I can't work out if I love this or hate it!

I can't stand the plywood cabinets, but I love the building. I just can't work out if living in that huge central space would make me uncomfortably agoraphobic...

Nah, I'd have that smile Put a couple of beautiful motorbikes in the centre of the 'living space' or one beautiful car and you're laughing.

Oh yes, some sort of classic car parked inside would be perfect. Alfa GT Junior or, if budget allowed, a classic Ferrari.

OK, now I love it!

I'd have a Ducati 748, and a V12 E Type sat in there.

In 50 years time, people will look back at modern extensions tacked onto period houses in the same way as we look back at 60s concrete carbuncles.
I like a bit of Brutalism smile
Actually, so do I, which was lucky as I went to Brunel University!

Definitely needs a classic car in there. Not sure about that basket seat on a 20 foot chain, the temptation to swing wildly on it would be too much.

Some nice houses on that site but some real odd ones too, like this

You can only live there if you dress like this

And no matter how brutalist & "iconic" the building is,it still looks like a grotty ex-council flat

Mid-20th century modernism ages quickly and badly.

I agree that a lot of the modern boxes tacked onto the older stuff are awful, but in this one, I think it's been done quite well...

That's very nice. Bit out of the way mind. And the downstairs layout is really odd. Pantry is miles from the kitchen, you walk through the bootroom to get from kitchen to lounge and the utility room is almost the largest downstairs room. Nice but odd

On balance, I prefer the "completely different" approach I think. That falls between two stools by its use of similar materials - it looks like a failed attempt to match, IYSWIM

Whilst I understand what you say, it's better than the Audi showrooms tacked on

Marginally, yes. I'll truffle off to find a good example!

Here you go, this is skillfully done, I think:

The modern's very clear (arf!), but the architect has alse been able to reference the construction of the old.

Agreed - I like that farmhouse.

One of our senior folk has a Grade 2 listed brick house, and they have linked the stable block to it with a completely clear glass extension with heated stone floor and a wood burning stove in it. It is awesome - especially in winter, when you can sit with the fire going in the middle of bad weather. Odd feeling - exposed but cosy.

Cost was astronomical, though. Almost the same as my whole renovation is costing in London.

The first one looks like part of the set of Grange Hill from the outside and the interior looks like the sort of place you'd never, ever want to see under UV.

The second one looks like an up and coming warlord's gaff in downtown Mogadishu. £300 notes to live on a sink estate? No amount of trendy decor can make that place walkable at night or somewhere to park a car.

I'm liking that. A lot.

Does seem nice. Good schools nearby and an easy enough run into Town. I wonder how often it's under water?
