Maximum height of a new wall adjacent to the pavement?

We want to take down an existing close boarded fence which is 4 feet tall with a 2 feet trellis on top and replace with a brick wall. The new wall will consist of a series of brick piers and be in filled with timber fence panels.
I would like to build the new wall piers to 5 feet, the fence panels will probably end up at 4 feet.
Is there a rule that determines the maximum height of a wall that will form a boundary between a front garden and the pavement?
Will I need to inform the planners regarding this or can I just build it?

I think it's 2M but it wouldn't hurt to check.

You might need planning permission by the description.

"You will need to apply for planning permission if you wish to erect or add to a fence, wall or gate and:

It would be over 1 metre high and next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway); or over 2 meters high elsewhere"

Thanks for the replies. We already have a fence which is 6 feet high, if we were to replace this with a wall of the same height do we need to seek permission?

Does the fact that we are not building a solid brick wall but a series of piers connected by fence panels make any difference to the maximum height?

Like everything it's a bit of a grey/disputed area, but usually as soon as you rebuild (rather than maintain what you have) you run the risk they will insist on 1M max, unless you have specific permission beforehand. Pick up the phone and ask them!

It's the total height that matters, not the construction, even 2M of very open trellis is not allowed 'adjacent the highway'.

I replaced an 8' fence with another 8' fence.

I suspect if you ask, the answer will be 1m.

With that in mind stop calling it a new wall and just say it's repairing the existing fence. Those fence posts that need to be renewed will be done by building brick piers (with a concrete centre and rebar?) etc.
