Which London commuter town?
Discussion
Interesting so far -
Virginia Water, Weybridge, Barnes, Richmond, Coombe, certainly all far too expensive really. Barnes is incredibly expensive.
The thing is, I'm actually from down towards Hartley Witney etc, not sure I'd want to head back that way and Fleet, Basingstoke, etc are all that way.
I've thought about Farnham as that offers a half decent sweet-spot, but there are only a few bits you'd want to live in, and they're touch and go budget wise. Luckily it isn't something I am planning on doing in the immediate future...

Do you want to be in close physical proximity of London, or happy with being only train commute of London.
As Farnham is very far out. Have you got into oldie mode , and so wanting a detached with land?
Important bit is the kids- if your OH also works in London and both commute then parenting will be a PITA. If one of you works nearby/from home/flexi then then much easier to move out of London.

Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, or Tunbridge Wells gets you into Waterloo East.
Or Chislehurst, Bickley, Elmstead Woods or Petts Wood East are very nice and closer in.. I think its got to be one or the other, I would still probably cycle to work out as far as Weybridge way, but certainly many of the others mentioned would be train. I'm not too bothered about living near London, I've debated recently whether we should go and live in central in a nice flat, but I'd only end up making the same move when I found I couldn't afford a house in the part of London I would consider living in.
There are some good suggestions here though, I suppose Waterloo is what is the sticking point as in my time I've lived nearly everywhere down that train line as far as Petersfield.

okgo, what sort of 4 bed are you after? Are we talking big, detatched and all mod-cons? I'd have thought you could get a terraced house in Barnes for that sort of money. £900k would get you something like this in East Molesy which is a good area for schools etc.
Well its only sort of on my radar at the minute, but ideally a 2k sqft house really. Maybe have a look at the prices in Barnes, its not cheap East Molesey while pleasant around the bridge etc is kind of not much different to surbiton really, apart from it has a worse and more expensive train line and not as many pubs, so I think the choice is likely to go a bit further afield to make the most of what a move can offer, space etc. Or may as well stay in Surbiton (which I've not ruled out, but its too expensive for what it is IMO).
Ah yes, I remember you mentioning on another thread you're in Surbiton now, there wouldn't be much point looking at East Molesy if that's the case!
You're also right about Surbiton, the house prices are mental for what you get - not saying it's a bad area but I'd want more for my money.
I'd suggest Clapham/Battersea as an option if it wasn't for the state school requirement, £900k would get a 3 bed terrace near St John's Hill/Northcote Rd and then you've got a nice, cheap commute into Waterloo from Clapham Junction.

Try Berrylands if you like Surbiton, you get the choice of both stations and there are some nice quiet roads tucked away there and you can get quite a lot of house and garden for your £900k. Much more than in central Surbiton.East Molesey while pleasant around the bridge etc is kind of not much different to surbiton really, apart from it has a worse and more expensive train line and not as many pubs, so I think the choice is likely to go a bit further afield to make the most of what a move can offer, space etc. Or may as well stay in Surbiton (which I've not ruled out, but its too expensive for what it is IMO).

All the way into town? A217 is probably easier but thats still a fking long way!
It's really not. 20-25 miles each way, depending on which bit of London you're riding to.
A23 for a faster commute, A217 for horrible rolling hills
OP is no stranger to a few miles on a bike
Last year we looked for something that was less than an hour door to door. We ended up finding a place in Horsell next to Woking as we really couldn't find anything lose that had so many fast trains to Waterloo along with having great links to major roads and access to some wonderful country side. Working town is also very much on the up and has everything you would want of a small town. Horsell itself has a couple of great pubs and has butcher, baker green grocer and soon to open fish monger. We just need the candle stick maker now.

3 hours commuting will be miserable every day...
By train it really isn't. I've been doing Tonbridge to Marylebone the last 3 years and it's a piece of piss. 90 mins door to door.3 hours a day (presumably more in winter leaves on the line and all that rubbish) is far too long to commute by choice IMO.
