Stupid question about planning permission

Hi guys,
I want to rebuild my garage which is in a very poor state. From what I can tell from planning rules, I'll need to apply for permission as I wish to put a proper apexed roof on the rear section rather than the flat one on there now (it's a double length garage where the rear section was added about 30 years ago).
Anyway, I've tried to call my local council planning office for a bit of advice/clarity but they were of little help. They just advised me to submit a planning application if I think I need it. I enquired as to what they'd need and it seems I would need to get proper scale drawings etc produced.
Ok, fair enough, so now the stupid bit. Who would produce these? Would I need a planning consultant of some kind? Seems a bit OTT for simply rebuilding a garage, albeit changing the height of the roofline.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Draw it yourself, as long as it has dims and location. To scale as well .
Yes, I suggested this to the planning dept I spoke with but she wasn't, shall we say, shall we say encouraging or optimistic about the idea. But seriously, how hard can it be? Just how much detail would they need? The only issue that affects planning from what I can see is height and maybe surface area. Simple line drawings to scale are all that is required.
I drew all mine and I haven't held a drawing pen since my schooldays 20+yrs ago.
However I'd check whether you'd be covered under PD Rights - google will bring up a simple guide.
If still in doubt insist on talking to a Planning Officer rather than some "helpdesk" numpty or go in to the Council office.

OP, are you sure it will need planning permission?
Don't forget that the planning department doesn't think it is there to help or advise you, it's there to process applications and meet targets. This means that they will never suggest not putting an application in or that it should be done in any way than the one that makes it anything other than easy for them.
You may have checked into this already but possibly you could put a garage up under permitted development rights, this would depend on size and position etc but if you post up some details we may be able to suggest if this is the case.
I'd also question whether renovating and improving an existing garage is anything that anyone is going to care about if you just crack on with it…………….

Drawing plans for something like that should be easy enough for someone capable of wielding a ruler. The lady at the Council sounds like your typical beaurocratic arse.

May initially seem like a daunting task but for a relatively simple project like yours, shouldn't be too bad OP. Get your stationary out and get drawing
Best of look with it and don't forget to create a new post on her once the project properly kicks off!
Location and block plans can we purchased via the planning portal (third party sites that they link too) and can be submitted as separate files (will cost you about £30)
