I'd like to buy or build one in the garden, any advice. Would a builder make me one for the same cost as you buy one? Anyone done it recently?

Always fancied this but diy. A large pile of sand and lots of clay. Put latter over pile of former, leave to set, remove former, light fire, cook pizza. Sort of. Have fun.

Saw a Man Lab episode recently where they did a Pizza Oven

Google man lab pizza oven

A lot of people seemed to have been inspired by it and built their own. There are a few video links etc. to give you an idea of the approach.

Cactussed; I've got the pizza oven you linked to, the XL plus one. I'd say its very useful as a patio heater, but for anything else, impractical.

That said we have used it many times for bbqs and cooked on it. Its just that with wood as the fuel, once it is ready to cook on (ie glowing embers left only) you have about 10-15 mins befor the embers are too cool to do anymore cooking. Filling this sort of oven with enough charcoal would be pricey...

So for cooking, you could use a mixture of coal and wood? Do you think the smaller version would be better or worse?

No I've never tried actual coal in the fire. Although the manual recommended that it can be used.

Charcoal may work ok, but you would need a few bags to get enough in there. There is quite some distance between the cooking area and the bottom of the oven where the charcoal would sit.

I'm now wondering if a gas BBQ with a gas patio heater may be a better way to go. Although sitting in front of the pizza oven when its a roasting hot crackling wood fire is very nice.

Just wondering if you could cook above the flames if you used a pizza stone?

I've just bought one of these and we've used it around a dozen times so far.

A friend started the ball rolling by building his own.
After watching him build his I realised that once you've factored in your time it's cheaper just to buy one.

The key to an outdoor oven is insulation, if it acts like a patio heater your loosing to much heat and it won't be any good.
A good pizza oven should reach around 450 degrees celsius and cook a pizza in around 90 seconds!

There great fun and a lot cheaper than having a BBQ but they do go through wood.

Cactussed - Lets say I havent tried that as me guessing an answer and then you buying the thing and being dissapointed is not the best. Is it easy to cook greasy meat on a pizza stone?

I did buy a pizza stone for the BBQ (i bought a granite cutting block from sainsburys for £15 - cheaper than any pizza stone and worked nicely). But never used it in the BBQ. Now that i think about it, i want too haha.
