Which car for DIY project at home?
Discussion
My solution to a similar problem was a series 2a soft top Land Rover, which I bought for £1500. OK it did need a new engine, but since then just a handfull of minor repairs costing pence in the 8 years that I've owned it.
I've had 8 x 4 sheets of plasterboard on the roof, but it's more suited to the smaller sheets which lie across the rear tub. Benefits for me are;
- No road tax
- £50 or so insurance
- Cheap to maintain - a brake master cylinder was about £15 last year and (apart from oil and a filter) was all that I spent on it
- Carries all sorts of crap / rubble without complaint
- easy to sweep out / keep clean
- doubles up as dog transport
No issues for me at the local dump either - don't even need a permit (Bucks)

Before you discount a white van check with the local council as to whether they let private vans with non commercial waste in. My local one at Ashford in Kent did on two days a week, was good for me. Had an old Pug Boxer LWB hi top, could fit anything in there including ton bags of ballast etc not worried about damage to the old beast
