As per bank holiday tradition I have been getting stuck into some diy. The job this weekend was to re paint the flaking garage door. It's a battered old door and not in the best condition but I don't really want to spend new door money really. Anyway the job went reasonably well apart from I don't really like the result at all. I used Bedic MSP smooth satin black to recoat after seeing it recommended and hammerite slammed. Seeing as it's water based it's gone and done what all water based paints seem to do and kept every mark from its application so the smooth finish is more like a hammered effect from the gloss roller. You can also see every roller mark. The paint is far too matte too so now it looks like a hammered blackboard and I hate it.
So does anyone either have a paint recommendation for a paint like the good old oil based ones that went on and smoothed out by themselves to look like glass or any tips on how to but water based paints on and not leave horrible brush/ roller marks everywhere?

I used water based stuff from the pick your own colour range at b and q sorry can't remember the brand. I have a fibreglass door old and tatty. Sanded up washed off a few times painted 2 coats with a brush seems fine. 2 doors to do wish I'd gone for the bigger tin now though. That said plan to replace them soon.

I used and recommended on a couple of threads here the Bedec paint so apologies if you don't like it but tbh I used white and imho it looks OK. Not high gloss but from a few feet away you can't see any runs or imperfections, it looks fine and no0w in it's second or third year and no reason to re-paint yet

If you manage to find a white that stays white do please let us know 'cos none of us have found it.

Actually that's not correct, car paint stays white and glossy so why not try spraying it?

I've just painted my garage doors with black gloss hammerite smooth. Quite happy with it. Probably not what you want to hear though. I found it very hard to avoid the odd run / sagging area but the general finish is good.

I don't know if a B&Q exterior gloss will be ok. It may be now as the paint I have on will act as a primer but my door is galvanized steel so I leaned towards the more specialised paint so I didn't have to primer and paint.

I think it may have been that thread I saw it recommended on. It's probably just my weak painting skills especially with water based that lead to my problems with the look. Maybe thinning it and a few more coats would actually have it going on smooth. Gloss rather than satin finish may have been a better call and hidden some sins too. If nothing else it's played a part as a tough primer. It was blue before so may go back to that after seeing it in black.

Nothing wrong with the hammerite garage door paint if you take your time. I used the hammerite special metals primer on my bare galvanised garage door first off. Then two THIN coats of top coat will leave it looking great. The key is to not put it on thick like your painting a wall etc. Two thin coats and you can get a great finish without runs. I do agree though it's not the nicest paint to work with..

Johnstones metal paint is what you need, doesn't need a primer or undercoat.

I recently painted my oil tank in Tractor / Machine paint - as you can guess it's what farmers use for tractors - goes on great - Ebay sellers or google for your nearest Agricultural supplier IIRC £12 for a litre which would just do a double garage door.
