Okay a few questions for you chaps. I can no longer cut my own lawn due to a disability and although my wife will do it she has so much else to do it often gets left until the grass is so tall it becomes a bit of a mission.
Why don't you pay a local gardener/handyman a few quid to do it once a fortnight? Robotic mowers are not cheap. You could be quids in.

The grass probably only grows six months of the year anyway.
I actually did some man maths on this and based on paying approx £30 each time and working on a 7 month mowing period (I was still mowing my lawn in October last year) it's very easy to justify the expense of one of these!

Plus, I'd rather watch a gadget than a Gardener, Mrs might think differently but that's besides the point. wink

Cool cheers Tim. I've set it up and all works ok but randomly it just turns sideways when following the cable home to charge and just falls off the edge of the lawn???, it works ok when in test mode but after being out mowing for an hour it has crashed 3 times off the edge of the lawn for no apparent reason???.
You must have at least 3 metres of dead straight perimeter wire run before the power prongs on the dock.

Check the perimeter wire connector hasn't become dislodged from the base station.

Check the wires are firmly tight within the perimeter wire connector.

Check the wires are twisted round each other on the run up to the perimeter wire to dock connector.

Check the wires are connected the right way round in the perimeter wire to dock connector. These machines only work anti clockwise.

Any perimeter wire joins must be made using the gel filled caps. No cheating with bodges.

And as with the OP, do you have any power cables running under the area?

Well, my RC304 has just arrived from Robotcenter.

Have taken it out of the box and have decided where to have the base station. But need to wait until later to start laying out the perimeter wires and get it going.

In terms of power supply, are people using outdoor sockets or are you drilling holes to run the wires inside the house?

My lawn is fairly lumpy and appears to be a mix of different grass types, so will be interesting to see how Stephen (yes, we have named it!) will cope and how the lawn will look after a couple of months.

I plugged mine into a socket in my garage - happily, it has a corrugated roof so it's easy for be to poke wires through.

Went to the mower shop today wholly expecting to walk out with a Honda HRX petrol mower but then saw the robot mowers and decided an Automower420 was a much better idea!

For those with or who know someone with a Husqvarna one, how often do you need to change the blades?

In the FAQ on their website they say every 1-2 months which seems a bit high maintenance bearing in mind the whole point is that it saves time.

I'm not really very familiar with Husqvarna mowers, but if the robots are anything like as good as their chainsaws it should be excellent. 2 months with a Robomow in summer could easily be between 400 - 600 mowing hours though so not bad I reckon!

How reliable is the perimeter wire in ensuring the mower doesn't go beyond it?

I ask as the lawn ends in a small river. If it falls in, its going to be rather expensive!

Oops!

Looking on the net they all seem pretty good at that. There's a video on youtube comparing a few models showing one going over a wire on a slope though.

ETA here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f-4J98EWrI

For my Bosch, it's been 100% reliable since I turned off the power to the shed - never gone outside the wire since.

The instructions say the Indego will learn the best mowing pattern the first few times it mows, and it seems it definitely has. I went out to the kitchen for something last night, noticed the time and thought I'd see it mowing - but no sign of it. Checked the app and it had cut the entire back garden in 16 mins, which is definitely as quick as I ever managed it.

I wouldnt be trusting it enough!

Why not run a small oak sleeper border, would look good, give a definitive junction between lawn and river and the robot would bounce off.

The installation instructions with my Robomow say that if you have a pool or lawn directly adjacent to a road, then to build a fence, just in case.

Interesting point Re: the road.

So now "robots" are starting to genuinely creep into people’s lives more, it does raise (purely hypothetical) questions like:

If I had a robot mover working away in my front garden and it escaped onto a road causing a motorist to crash, who would be at fault? The manufacturer of the robot? The person that installed/programmed the robot? or the owner of the robot?

If you crashed because a large slow-moving object was on the road? That would be your fault.

Good idea as it is, it would rather spoil the look of the lawn running down to the rivers edge, and it would be a huge amount of sleepers!

What happened when power to the shed was on?

Hi - (very) long time lurker just joined up and finally have something to contribute!

Had a Robomow for about three months and from how it has operated so far - it has never strayed over the wire and I'd be comfortable that it was unlikely to. We had a power cut this week for 20mins whilst the mower (Shaun) was working away. It stopped instantly the power went off and then commenced mowing once the power was back on. Impressed so far, although it doesn't like undulating lawns - gets stuck easily, particularly when the ground is damp.

Ah - thats a worry as mine is like corrugated roof in places!

Laying the wire down this afternoon so first mow today hopefully.

Re: the river, you'll find that it is advised not to run a guide wire along a slope (ie traverse) if possible, so I dont think you'll be able to find a robot mower that will mow to the water's edge.

It initially worked fine for a few days - however, then started driving straight over the perimeter wire and complaining it was now outside the wire and stopping.
