Need more than that to use £3,000 worth of water a year, I suspect - That is two tonnes a day!
The bill normally includes waste water at a similar rate to fresh water, so the actual water use will around half that.

Being pedantic I think two tonnes of water would cost around £2.60,so the volume of water suggested to have been used is likely to be higher.

However, we had a borehole drilled last week so I don't care what water costs smile

Water meters are fairly simple things.its impossible for them to turn without water flowing through them.
This may be true as regards an analogue meter but not a digital one.
We bought a shop with a flat above to rent out & both had digital water meters which were clocking up at an alarming rate with the stopcocks turned OFF.

I could make the meters clock up by tapping them or tapping the worktop above.
A lorry going past would do the same.

I took a video as proof and Severn Trent changed them. I think someone said that the pipes not being earthed properly could cause it but don't quote me on that.

Was your Aunt's water meter a digital one?

It's around 500 cubic metres of usage then which is 500 tonnes over 6 months - that's around 2.7 tonnes a day, or 600 gallons rounding up. It's a lot however you look at it smile

You're right - I didn't do the maths, just halved the £3000 (as people usually quote the bill total, rather than just the fresh water part) and therefore halved the two tonnes originally noted.

Actually you did do the maths :-)

£1600 bill will be approx £800 of fresh water used. Water is roughly £1.5 per cubic metre so 800/1.5 gives roughly 500 cubic metres!

Maybe not the issue in this case, but at my aunt's house after she had just had a digital meter fitted and seeing her bills I realised she wasn't reading the meter correctly.

The one she has is in the format XXXXXX.YYY where X are the whole numbers and Y are the decimal places. She was including the decimals in her reading which really messed things up on her bills and predicted an annual usage of more than a family of 6, when she lives alone.

As it so happens we have just had our water metered bill in.

4 person household.
6month and actual meter reading at the start and also at the end.

Baths every day showers twice a day washing machine on twice most days dishwasher on twice most days and if the water buts are empty I water the garden I also fill up the kids paddling pool from the tap too.

Water used is 56m3 so grossing up a likely annualised usage of 112m3 (possibly less as I water the garden more in the 6 months just been v the 6m to go but even so it's small beer).

How does that compare?

No the OP has not verified the meter reading actual at start of period and then at the end - both as actual readings time frame and then the specific usage.

What we've said is volume of water usage to come up with a bill of £1600 so we can compare how huge the usage is. Simples!!!

Anyways.... let's end the sidetrack now smile
