House Insulation - possibly AeroGel
Discussion
I have a detached house which gets pretty cold in the winter.
One big problem is a large external hall wall that forms one side of the staircase.
Exterior insulation isn't really an option unfortunately. A friend has suggested that it's possible to buy plasterboard with an AeroGel backing which provides excellent insulation without taking up too much width (the staircase is already on the narrow side).
I've searched online but I can only seem to find rolls of insulation with some form of Aerogel on the back. It doesn't look like they'll provide a hardwearing surface.
Has anyone any experience of these products?
Thanks

Never used a Pl/board with an aerogel backing but it is available,I hope you're sitting down when you see the price! One big problem is a large external hall wall that forms one side of the staircase.

I've used insulated pl/board in my 1890's house and it is very effective, stick it to the existing surface with a foam

I would go for a phenolic foam backed board over aerogel. Its readily available and works well. Fraction of the price as well. For a given thickness phenolic is about twice as efficient as mineral wool, I think. I'm an industrial lagger and we've only used aerogel on one job in the last 10 years. Even I thought it was itchy and I'm pretty much immune to fibreglass!

I'm looking to do similar in my home - insulate the 'internal' external walls - can you recommend any products/suppliers for the phenolic backed boards please?S6PNJ said:

I think most builders merchants would sell it. If not, we use SIG group or there's CCF. Most of what we use is "technical" insulation, not the domestic stuff.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
