Heating Oil Tank - keep topped up or run to 'empty'?

I was wondering what's the best thing to do regarding filling a domestic oil heating tank.

Based on the last 12 months' consumption, I have just about enough oil to last another 12 months. There is insufficient room at the moment to take the usual 500 litre minimum amount (probably 250 at most).

What do other 'oilers' do - top up the minimum amount as soon as it'll fit in the tank, run to almost empty and re-fill completely - or somewhere inbetween?

Does keeping the tank topped up minimise contamination from internal water condensation to any degree? Does any particular method have cost implications - 'averaging out' oil price fluctuations versus potentially having to buy at a peak in price?

If you have enough to last 12 months, I'd top it up next summer, when you'll get the best price.

Possibly, but the price of oil has been creeping up recentlyfrown A few months ago oil was working out cheaper to run than mains gas!

That's the onset of winter. We used to fill up in August, but were in a local buyers club also, which seemed to get the best deal.

Roofer is spot on. If you can, don't distress purchase. Never run out, as wanting delivery today tends to increase the price, buying in winter puts the price up as demand is higher too. In summer there is less demand, companies have to pay for storage/whole sale tends to be less. If you're keen and have a medium term view on oil prices take that into account too.

Oil burning equipment is pretty tolerant, like old diesels were. So I would not worry about condensation/contaminants unless advised specifically about your kit.

Oil buying groups are also a good way to reduce your price, our local community shop gets a further discount beyond anything I can get playing companies off each other.

Keep warm,

(burn wood....(cut wood, move wood, split wood, move wood, burn wood, clean ashes and rinse....)) or put the heating on

We had oil CH in our last place for 9 years, so have used 'Boilerjuice' and other local buying clubs before.

However, the tank was quite small so there was never really an alternative to filling up frequently. We had a new oil system installed this time last year using a bigger tank, so it's the first time I've really given it some thought!

Sadly, the OPEC mob seem to be pushing prices up - together with the usual 'seasonal' demandfrown

My one finger typing put me behind the chat, sorry.

All being equal get the oil in summer. If you agree the world economy is not likely to improve by the summer, and opec may well put crude up a bit, but if its not hugely then summer is your bet.

Don't worry about your kit though.

Oh, I stopped worrying about that a long time ago smile

Thanks for the reassurance regarding the boiler, too!

definitely don't run out by accident as we have done that a couple of times and we always have to piss about with the boiler for a few days afterwards.

I wouldn't try and second guess world oil prices, so I can't see it getting any cheaper between now and easter.
