Chaps. I have a LOT of Yarrow in the lawn.
Any suggestions on killing it other than Verdone?

That's what I've used, just trying to maintain consistency of cut is a bit tricky. Hopefully I'll be better at it next time.

Thought I'd share my garden & grass improvement. Its a new build with the turf having been replaced twice
over the past few winters

I took matters into my own hands, the problem was leather jackets.

Slowly getting there in the lawn department now!

June 2017

Hmmm...we seem to have stopped in terms of progress in June...it looks no different now. Just wanted to ask a few questions if anyone can assist, all to do with overseeding.

1-I've sprayed the lawn with Hysward-P as there is quite a lot of clover and other weeds. How long should I leave it before overseeding?

2-I was going to spike the lawn, then fertilise, then seed, leaving a few days between steps. Is this right?

3-Fertiliser...I have some ACL Sportsmaster fertiliser, however it's marked "Spring/Summer". Is it worth going for something like Scott's autumn Lawn Builder? However it does seem pricey and I have large area to do!

4-Should I be going for any particular type of grass seed?

Thanks!

My attention is turning to scarifying now autumn is setting in.

What is the order?

Cut grass (short or long)?
Scarify
Over-seed

Cut it short, scarify, aerate, seed, top dressing and then wait...

Booger...

To partly answer my own question above, the Hysward-P suppliers are saying I might need to wait 3 months before fertilising and seeding. That's annoying, as I have now applied the Hysward-P so it effectively means no further progress until Spring!

Has anyone got a different view or any experiences? I really, really wanted to get some more seed down this autumn...I suppose I could always just try a test area and see if it germinates?

tbh its hard to know exactly without looking at what its like underneath, it looks like its lacking nutrients to me and could do with a good nitrogen feed, however you dont want to be putting loads of nitrogen down generally towards the end of the season. I often come across lawns looking pale like that when its getting quite compact also, if its all quite new that shouldnt really be the case but aerations are always helpful.

I cant see much issue with putting seed down after the weedkill, aslong as you have done the weedkill before the seeding should be fine but you can always do a test area if you want.

I'd probably give it a couple of liquid moss control treatments over the autumn and winter which will green it up and keep the moss at bay and start the spring with a good nitrogen feed, you look to have plenty of grass which isnt very old so seeding seems abit pointless to me, just need to get the grass thats there growing healthier which means regular feeds throughout the year.

The technical guy from a Rigby Taylor who came out to see me said I shouldn't seed sooner than 4 weeks after weedkilling despite what the manufacturers of the weed killer said. I guess the worst that will happen is some of your new seed is wasted.

I have seeded countless lawns, anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of days after spraying for weeds and never had an issue, yes we dont use the above products but I cant see it that much different. you are only applying a very light mist which wont even reach the soil, main think I have always found is to obviously waiting a few cuts before you weedkill afterwards as you need to let the grass establish itself, as a business I couldn't operate having to wait 4 weeks after spraying so it may not be to guidelines, but just giving you feedback on our results.

If it was a total weedkill that may be a different matter but we never use that so couldnt say

Cheers for that advice guys. The clover is shriveling up nicely now so as soon as it's properly dead and I can rake it up, I'll try a few test areas with seed and if it takes it takes. I get the point on letting the grass establish, my issue is that some areas are incredibly lush and thick and grow at a ridiculous rate, where other areas are clearly "lines" of poor grass, where the lines are corresponding to where the drop spreader has been when the landscapers sowed the seed. Fortunately, I really don't seem to have any moss.

14 days from sowing it...

I don't think I can wait more than another 2 weeks before cutting it. I know you should wait until it's around 3-4 inches, but it's that length already in most places. At what point can I walk on it to remove leaves and weeds? There are also a few areas which are a little bare compared to the rest, should I put some extra seed down there now and cover with a little top dressing or should I wait until the spring and seed the whole lot?

Electric raker on offer at Amazon today, £55: clicky

Would it do a better job than the scarifying blade I have for my mower (the sort with a couple of tines that stick down like this)?
